Yup. The application of 1911 therapy is good in and out of home.

I would use a long gun for HD, but can not properly secure it from the fingers of a 14 month old child.

My CCW (Browning BDA or "Browning Beretta", as I call it) is not my home defense gun, dubbed "Mr. Smith" (S&W 645). But, well, it's ready if I need it.

Needless to say, I don't update my weapons often.
:D

Yep. S&W 3913LS for both roles. Same for my wife (G26, with a G19 magazine for HD and the shorter mags for carry).

Now if your hypothetical home invader were to kindly call me beforehand and let me know he was about to break in and wreak havoc and mayhem, one of the carbines with a 30-rd mag would be my first choice...but since we have kids, it's usually neither safe nor practical to have a carbine standing in the corner, whereas a handgun can be more easily secured from little hands.

Not usually. My current HD pistol is a Glock 20 10mm with nightsights and a surefire X200. I also have a 870 police magnum with 00 buck and a bushmaster Mforgery in the closet.

Oh really

No better home defense weapon than a five shot snubbie. ;) Very hard to wrestle it away, plenty of power without overpenetration. I have other carry pieces, but often carry the snubbie.

I think the principle behind the HD handgun is that one will have to pick it up at any hour of the day or night and settle the matter from start to finish with what is in his/her hand and with the ammo in the gun.

Picture yourself standing there in your shorts (if that :D ) with a gun and no reloads--if you feel well protected with a 5 shot snubbie and ready to deal with more than one intruder, then that's your call. Not to say that having a snubbie stached away at a strategic place as extra insurance isn't a good idea. In today's world of multiple assailants who can be well armed, the snubbie is far better than nothing, but not the optimun HD gun IMO.

For a number of reasons my carry gun is a .380 (mostly size & weight reasons since I am limited to pocket carry)

Since size & weight are not an issue for a non-carry weapon , my home defense handgun is a .44 magnum.

For carry purposes I want something concealable and comfortable enough I'm willing to pack it every day. Usually for me thats a PM9, although lately I've been using my Para LDA. I recently purchased a Kahr 45 and might switch over to that after it's broken in.

Bedside I prefer to use a full sized weapon so currently I've got my S&W 410 in .40 with 11+1 and a spare magazine. I could use the LDA as a bedside gun also and not feel undergunned at all but I just like having the extra rounds the S&W affords. Of course I've also got a mossberg with a light using #4 buck switching to 00 buck halfway through the tube living under the bed right now.

All that being said I think I could use my carry gun as a bedside piece if I wanted to do so. I've always said if your gun will stop them on the street then it will stop them in your house. If you aren't willing to use your carry pistol as a home defense weapon why would you carry it in the first place?

I voted "sometimes." Over the holiday I had to sell all my long guns so at this point CCW pieces are doing double-duty as home defense guns.

Come spring, I'll have the option of a shotgun again.

Yes!

Unfortunately, it's the only gun I own right now. Had to sell the .45 due to financial constraints. Probably gonna end up replacing it with a Glock 22 or 23 (.40 S&W with 15-rd. mags sounds a little nicer).

If it's not on my hip, it's next to me when I sleep!

Yes, in the sense that if I'm not in the bedroom, the BHP is what I'll use for home defense. Otherwise, the Franken-14 sits next to the bed.

Practical, Close-By and Convenient

Most of the opinion poll seems to indicate in the Affirmative -- that is, using your daily carry piece as the usual home defense weapon. I would hazard a guess that for most people, their CCW handgun is kept nearby the bed at night with a tactical flashlight and a phone nearby.

Those who haven't yet done a series of different kinds of Home Invasion / Burglary scenarios should do so with family members every so often. There was a home invasion recently in the news with the victims being a family not so far away and we practiced two different scenarios.

Good to think "what if..." once in awhile at home, not just on the street.

Just hope the BG doesn't wrestle that long gun away from you and shove it up your you know what before he pulls the trigger.

That would be why my 870 has an 18" police barrel and an M3 light under it. Long enough to be useful, not long enough to give them leverage to grab. It's an HD gun, not a duck gun.

When you have a choice, and when you have the ability to make a room a defensive position, long gun always wins over pistol.

yes and no.

I still carry either a p13 or a commander. but the wife has deemed it time to reposition the furniture and so now the bed stand is at an angle where my leaning ove nad stick the carry gun into the night stand holster is not so comfy unless i am laying down. and i do not want that. so i unwrapped a Gov;t model and it now resides there full time. and the carry piece goes into the chair where i lay my pants when i take them off. it just stays in the holster until i change over to mornings pants. that way if i grab them and go in the ni ght i am prepared too.

I have talked about this before too. if you have kids in the house and need a place to store a ready weapon out of their touch, mount a rack or just some brackets on the INSIDE of the closet over the door. I have had this for years and the kids never found it till they were old enough to knowwhere the grab guns were. In a single depth closet, that is, not a walk in, there is not enough depth to get in and then turn around for most people when there is stuff in the closet. For years my guns resided on a piece of industrial magnet material that would have taken a very strong child to have the strength to remove. My Wife had to almost do a pull up on the shotgun to get it loose. but she like that knowing that untill the kids were 90 pounds or so, they could not get a chair and get the guns down.
We had two long guns there plus a couple of other handguns.

now with the new house, i did not mount the magnet, but instead just made some wooden racks that hold the guns in secret.

Nope:

Security Six 357 Mag in nightstand..

12ga High Standard Riot shotgun in closet.

Bersa Thunder (UC) w/CAT laser also in closet

Sig P239 also in closet. (Crimson Trace Laser for it to be released for sale in FEB).

For Concealed carry:

S&W 638 Bodyguard w/CT lasergrips

For VERY cocealed carry:

KelTec P32, or NAA Guardian 32

I usually end up using my carry piece as my nightstand gun simply because I am most familiar with it. But I also have a shotgun in the corner.
