Do Your Guns Cost More Than Your Car?

Well, let's see now...

Browning Hi Power MkIII 9mm: $589 Out The Door.

1969 Chevy Pickup: free.

My Grandpa bought the pickup new in '69, and when he died, he left it to my Mom. When I got my licence, I became the one who drives it. Although I don't officially own it, I'm the only one who drives it.

You can't beat free. ;)

YEP!

As an "oldtimer" I remember buying cars"new" for $2700 so I cannot and would
not purchase a new vehicle paying $20,000 plus like many things in our new world it is a ripoff. Having said that guns have some value and they dont fall to
pieces after 6 years so you know where I stand.

For most of my life I drove $300 to $500 cars because I grew up working on them and wasn't bothered by a roadside breakdown from time to time.

This left money for guns, college, beer, girls etc...

Even when I got married the wife and I still drove very inexpensive cars
and when her new nissan was in the shop there was always an old truck
or dodge dart for her to drive.

When we had our first child that all changed. I was looking for dual stage airbags, crumple zones, child seat, locks, anti-lock brakes.

Most importantly sometthing that won't leave you on the side of the road in 110 degree heat with a 2 year old.

So we bought two new cars and my gun budget flew into the toilet.

With $1000 per month in car payments all it leaves is a small C&R budget
and some room for reloading if I don't eat out, buy new clothes or drink beer.

Small sacrifice for safe kids and a new gun from time to time.

I sincerely cannot wait until my guns are worth more than my cars again.
Only about 25% there right now..

Not even close. The G-Glide Rideâ„¢ was more than my guns. Here is a quiz question, can anyone tell me the firearm that goes with the mag in the center console?

JG, you have a Evo 8?

I do too! :) I thought gun folks only drove big old trucks? Cool, so I am not the only Evo pilot here....

You are not alone, I got it about 3 weeks ago. Without a doubt, gun enthusiasts certainly like their trucks (go to a gun show and it will be quite clear). That aside though, I have seen plenty of cars at the range, all types and sizes.

My cars far outprice my guns...but I'm closing the gap as quick as i can.

BTW, nice Z3 Tamara..but some of the "landscaping" is growing too close

Hmmm...I think I need a bumper sticker on the butt of my PD trade-in $125 Rem 870 that say's, "my other shotgun is a Merkel".

To answer the question though- Yes, I believe the value of my guns exceeded the value of my car this year- with both slightly moving in opposite directions... and neither worth all that much.

Let's see, I shoot a:

K-9
Glock 27
Remington .22 rifle

I drive a:

2002 Honda Civic

So to answer your question, no, but I'm working on it.

Purchase price or current value? Purchase price no, current value yes. I drive inexpensive used cars (I don't believe in car payments) but I don't have a lot tied up in firearms - yet - either.

Since I can easily put 1-3K miles on my car in a month as part of my job (I'm in I/T but I have to drive my own car to various facilities around TN and KY that my company operates) I figure I'm destroying it's value, so I see no point in having a nice one. Current example is a 94 Chevy Corsica for which I paid $4500 cash with 84K miles on it just over 3 years ago. It is now just past 210K miles. It doesn't look like much but it still runs just fine. Prior to that I had a Ford Escort that ran just fine for 260,000 miles. If you do the maintenance they will run ... most of the people I know whose cars die it turns out they didn't keep up on the preventative maintenance.

Total tied up in firearms right now is about $2500. That Corsica isn't worth $2500 currently, I'm quite sure. When I decide to replace it I'll once again buy something 3-5 years old and pay cash for it.

Used to be a definite "my guns cost more than my ride" back when it was a beat-to-crap 1975 Chevy pickup purchased at auction from the Navy. Now the tables have turned since I'm in a Z06 vette. But continued accumulation may yet even things out...

Wow, and I thought I was the only one around here who enjoyed and appreciated fine cars just as much as fine guns. I've been feeling kind of guilty for living in Texas and not driving a truck and carrying a gun. The second part of this has been rectified (I now have my CHL), but trucks are still not my cup of tea. Here’s my garage, and obviously I have a lot of shopping (plus one divorce :D ) to go through to bring my total spent on guns up to total spent on cars.

Nice ride there… How do you like it so far? Silver G500 is on my very short list of what to get once lease on my X5 is up. However, I prefer BMWs to MBs because of handling, and up until now the looks. However, with the new direction BMW is headed, that is changing very quickly. Now even new E class (which I personally never liked before) looks much better than new 5 series bimmer.

Tamara:
Nice roadster too… Used to have one of those before trading it in for E46 a few years ago.

Aleko- My wife is jealous of your X5! My C-Class has been quite good to me so far. People rub me about having "just a C-Class"...then I ask them what they drove when they were 21 years old (that daddy didn't buy of course) :D It has been excellent mechanically except for a few very minor issues. For example, the ball joints on the front suspension were a little dry but some lube fixed the squeak. I would agree that the BMWs have a handling and power edge to the MBs. But I don't agree about the E-Class. I like their bodies but the front and rear lamp styling looks horrible IMHO. I've never really liked the E and I probably never will until they revamp their headlamps. Nice house BTW!

Daniel,
I guess you might be right about lights on E. I could never figure out what it is, but something turns me off when looking at E-class (both old and new body). I like C and S exterior a lot, but C is a little too small for my taste, and S is a little too “classy†(I’m in my mid 20s, a little too early for a car of that class). Besides, MB’s handling is not there yet. ML looks too much like a minivan (and drives like one), and has had way too many problems from the very beginning (a couple of my friends made a mistake of buying one). G-class looks…. well, “differentâ€; kind of like H1 – edgy, bulky, a little ugly, but there is something about it that is very appealing. I’ve been bimmer fan for years, but with newer designs (E65 7 series, Z4, now new E60 5 series) – I have a feeling I’m on my last BMWs until (if) they go back to their more traditional (and less controversial) designs.
Alex.

Standing Wolf sez ........
It would cost me more to replace all my guns than my car.
Hmmm ... got me to thinkin ..... Chevy Silverado 2001, with cap added ( I won't include wife's Jetta) ......... guess that's around $15k.

welld2_20_cap3_ss.jpg

Note ... SMALL pic ... loads quicker!! Dig at some other HUGE pics!!!

The guns ...... hmmm too lazy to do the math but .... I have a feeling that the figure is probably ''up there'' or close!!!:p Frighteningly so!! Must do the math again soon.

Well let's see ...

An authentic second world war issue Inglis Browning HP complete with the correct stock/holster vs an 1980 Ford Pinto. Jeez, just do the math ... :)
