a short action bolt action
.243-.260 or .308?
sub 21 inch barrel
Iron Sights
detacheable box mag?

I would like a wood stock too!

Anyone know of this rifle being produced? I don't care if it's controlled feed or push feed, but this is the rifle I want.

Here you go. The detachable box clips into the cover plate. Just curious why you want a detachable mag?

A-Bolt Micro

This one doesn't completely match your criteria but it is considerable less than the Browning. Also it is shorter and weighs less as well. You could always change the stock with the money you saved.

10CFM

I just like having a detacheable mag.

It isn't super critical, but I think it would be a nice feature.

Thankyou to all the replys, and where could I find a good replacement walnut stock for the Savage?

Actually, open sights and a wood stock are more important to me then a detacheable mag.

I think the CZ might be a possibility, but I heard the bolt throw is funny on them. Will have to feel one up real good for I make a decision on it.

Could I have open sights installed on a rifle? Idea on cost?

I really like the Model 70 action, but I just don't see anything they build currently that fills the bill.

Get a Win mod 70 classic sporter and have Winchester install a removable mag trigger guard & floorplate, this is only a custom shop option and get either Win to install sights or have a smith do it. Winchester used to do this, but.....

The Ruger Compact M-77 MkII might also fit the bill, though mag is not detachable.

Iron sights can be added easily by any gunsmith.

I would think it would run $50 to $100 + the cost of the sights to have them installed. Take a look at the XS Sights. I think these would do well on a scout rifle for a back up to a scope. They acquire really quick and at close range (Cougars).

For a stock take a look at these guys . They are just down the road from you. I have used them on a couple rifles and have been really pleased.

Here's what I'd do:

Start with VZ-24 action. Put a heat sink on the bolt handle and bend it to the appropriate angle. Install Timney 2-2.5lb trigger. Install Lyman #57. Install .243 barrel and fit with the correct front sight base (figure which height of blade later, at sight-in). Drop in stock of choice. Install 1909 Mauser trigger guard with hinged floorplate. Problem solved. :D

It'd be cheaper to just buy a Charles Daly in .243 - it's a Zastava Mauser.

Remington 788 in .308!
They don't make 'em anymore, but there are quite a few on the used market. fits all your requirements

I'll be looking at the older remingtons, like the 788s and the 600s...

I have a question on them though, can I use 700 parts in them? Like the trigger springs and such to reduce locktime?

I'd like to make it a pretty trick rifle.

Worse comes to worse, I'll get a model 70 and put sights on it.
