So I'm kind of new to concealed carry and I'm messing around with different holsters and whatnot. Ive landed on the Winthrop dual snap leather holster for my sr9c, but now im looking for something for my that's much smaller and easier to manage for a ruger lc9...

Here's my problem. Everything Ive found (with the exception of another Winthrop) is based on a clip, and not a snap. For some reason (keep in mind im pretty large so this is a one handed procedure) I simply cannot get a clip inside my waistband and around my belt to save my life... So what I end up having to do is put the clip on my pants or shorts first, then put them on, and then wear my gun. Is this how others do it? Most of these clips are built the same way. What do we think?

I think you should consider looking at some of the better quality kydex holsters. Good ones are a lot less bulky than leather while offering excellent stiffness and retention. Consider a j-hook instead of a clip. Also buy your pants a little larger so that there is more room for the gun and holster

I wear iwb and my holster stays on my pants . I have cc'd for 27 years and am also a big boy . Pocket carry working as a carpenter and iwb away from work and always hated metal clips. No metal clips or even tight clips. I do put my holster on my pants before I put them on. One company that has an interesting iwb is Garrett Holsters silent thunder fusion. Kydex and leather , lined in leather. Nice. Looks to be very adjustable

I retired 7 years ago and started cc'n a larger commander sized kahr , tp40 , and find I can wear it ether 2:10 position rear cant or 3:30 forward cant with the same holster just swapping the belt hooks and sit and drive with it on the front side. Comp-tac has the best belt hooks out there . Tuckable for when that's needed, easy to lock in and stay's in place. My problem with many iwb holsters a limited or no adjustablity. I have tried a couple other makes and designs and keep comeing back to my comptac. The little wider holster tend to not cause any pressure points small thin holsters can. At least for me. Hang in there. Gota give a holster a few weeks for you to get use to it. Put it on your pants before putting them on and all can work well.

This is my comp-tac neutral. , it is for the shorter cw9 but works fine. I cut off the extra un need leather on the bottom.

Thanks Guy's.
Hardluk, the comptac looks like it rides really high. I like mine to ride low almost at the belt line. I really like holsters with snaps... theyre much easier for me. Can anyone recommend a holster with snaps for the lc9?

OWB

Here is a Dom Hume holster I carry sometime with a KelTec PF9; should be about the same size as your Ruger. Shirttail or summer vest over it, no bulge at all.

I assume you're wanting an IWB holster?

I've always been a fan of the Galco Royal Guard. Unfortunately, they don't list the SR9, specifically, so you'd have to go with one that's close. Being leather, that shouldn't be an issue.

As mentioned above you didn't specify, but I'm assuming you are talking about IWB holsters. If so, practically everybody makes IWB holsters with loops and snaps. Until fairly recently the vast majority of IWB holsters used leather loops, it is only in recent years the clips have became popular.

Milt Sparks has a few models http://www.miltsparks.com

Mitch Rosen http://www.mitchrosen.com

Alessi http://www.alessigunholsters.com

Andrews http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm

Lobo http://www.lobogunleather.com

the list continues…

Hi JTQ, thanks for all the links, I like the Alessi deep cover, they dont have one for the lc9 though, just the lcr :(

oh and yes i did mean IWB, Id need a BIIIG coat to carry OWB. And I'm in Texas ;)

Agree. I've always hated clip on holsters and prefer something that the belt slips through.

Foxx, with J clips.

For Ruger: http://foxxholsters.onlybusiness.com/OnlineCatalog/Ruger_Models-list.aspx

I use this for my S&W Shield: http://foxxholsters.onlybusiness.com/OnlineCatalog/Hybrids_for_Smith___Wesson-details.aspx

Want clipless? http://foxxholsters.onlybusiness.com/OnlineCatalog/OWB_Hybrid_Holster-details.aspx

The J clips keep it in your pants when drawing, holster and all can be easily removed by loosening belt, goes back in just as easy. (Well, the IWB version!)
VERY affordable.

Quite frankly, if you are too large to get your other hand over there, getting that in check is FAR more likely to save your life than carrying a gun.

But yes, get a higher quality holster. I have cut down on my holster collection...I have about 16 now that get, or could get, used. Do you know how many of the ones I kept use a single metallic clip like my first inexpensive holsters? Zero.

One way to put them on is to get everything other than your belt and gun, and probably without buttoning your pants yet...then put the holster in place...and finally slide the belt through the holster slots as you are sliding it through your belt loops. I have leather IWB holsters (like Milt Sparks VMII) whose loops snap open/shut...but I find it easier to thread the belt through than to use the snaps

Concealment holsters....

For the Ruger SR compacts Id suggest the excellent Wright Leather Works Predator line. It has a side shield & band to aid holstering. It comes in a variety of colors & fits many brands/styles.
Wright Leather Works also markets IWB rigs & other holsters.
The price is approx $88.00 USD. Shop times & delivery may vary, contact the office before ordering.

I've done it both ways. I don't see any special advantage to one over the other. This way you describe here isn't "wrong," and it certainly isn't unsafe. If anyone were to argue that this method is dangerous, my first question would be, is there a safe way to holster a loaded firearm? Anyone who thinks the answer is "no" has no business dealing with handguns.

is there a safe way to holster a loaded firearm?

Yes. Finger off the trigger, gun pointed in a safe direction. It is as safe as loading that firearm in the first place was, and as safe as wearing the loaded and holstered gun after holstering it. Especially for holsters that feature active, secure retention devices.
