So, I finally found a holster that's comfortable, the leather gun belt that's sturdy and good looking, and am working on fitting the whole setup into my spare tire ;)

The problem now -the belt squeaks.

The sound mainly comes from the front clip on my Galco IWB holster.

The clip is metal.

So...

1) Anything I can do to make it go away ?

2) Should I replace the clip ? If I do would Kydex be any less noisy ? I was entertaining the idea of J-clips anyway, as they are far less noticeable with a tucked shirt.

Interesting, Dad always used (power transfer) belt dressing when he wore belt pouches. It was more to give the leather a better "grip" and keep the pouches from sliding but it stands to reason if the leather was "stickier" the holster wouldn't move as much stopping squeaks as well.

I wear a hand made leather belt that is waxed. I remember asking what it was treated with when I purchased it. The maker said bees wax and mink oil. It doesn't squeak against other leather and hasn't rubbed off on clothing that I know of. Hope this helps.

Thanks for replies.

I tried some baby powder, didn't make much difference.

I also stuck the front clip under the belt and this took care of it. I will likely get a J-clip for front position. These metal clips are a giveaway, anyway.

I like the j-clip on my DeSantis for just that reason, Wanderling. It's virtually unnoticeable.

To stop the squeaking, though, try some leather treatment (soap or wax) on the belt.

J clip &support

Doesn't the use of a "J" clip defeat the purpose of a belt to provide support and stability? After all you are hanging the holster/weapon on the waistband of your skirt/trousers and not the belt?

Isn't this a problem?

Nope, it's not "hanging" on my trousers. Yes, it's clipped to the pants, but the cinched belt sandwiches it in and provides lateral pressure against the clip on the holster and the holster itself, improving retention as well. Mine is a S&W 637. It weighs a mere 15 oz. It's not exactly dragging my pants down.

A little bit of corn starch mixed in with olive oil takes the squeaks out of the saddles I build....

So far I am working around this by simply tucking the front clip under the belt and leaving the rear clip latched on. But I think I will just get J-clips. Any good source for them ?
