Has anyone figured out which powder is the most economical to load 10mm auto with 170 grain lead cast bullets at about 1100 fps?

I have recently gotten back to reloading and only have AA No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9. Of those three, No. 5 can achieve the velocity with the lowest weight of powder (about 8.0 grains). No. 7 takes about 9.9 and No. 9 takes about 12.1.

So assuming that 8 pounds of these powders cost $140; that works out to 7000/8 = 875 charges per pound; or $0.02 per charge/powder throw.

Is there another powder that can push a 170 grain lead bullet at 1100fps for less money in a 10mm?

I'm shooting about 25K annually. If I could economize to the tune of .1 cents per round, I'd be saving $25 a year. That's only because I shoot a lot, though. I don't worry too much about powder costs. The other components figure in much more heavily.

Have you looked into surplus pulldown powders?
I use the nato pull down AA7 equivalent (www.hi-techammo.com) behind a 170gr hardcast to get up to 1200fps. Since I cast my own bullets this is a damn cheap (though labor intensive) load.

GaryM,

Thanks for the lead on surplus pulldown powders.

I had never heard of such a thing. So, something new to learn about.
