No. The 696 is an L-frame, while the 629 is an N-frame (which is why the 696 holds 5 rounds, and the 629 holds 6 rounds).

The 696 3" L-frame 44 special is the same size as the 686 3" L-frame 357 mag. You're right, there are not many of either around. There may be more 686 in the 2.5" version in your neighborhood, which is very close to the 696. Hope this helps.
