By contrast the DFW area gun stores are far more normal in terms of the customer base.

I left the DFW area aged 18 and only returned three decades later. The intervening time I spent in rural central Texas, where the LGS was very much often a place of wood paneling, adequate coffee, and better tales than down at the VFW around a pot bellied stove (if not needed for heat much in Texas). Ok, so, once in a blue moon white separatists might wander in, but the number of LE and military seemed make them as nervous. High-priced attorney or a brahmin in city or county government--and as uncomfortable among "real" people, too.

So, that's my "normal"--I'm not quite used to modern-day DFW LGS quite yet. The shop in Euless is strarting to grow on me, though.

Yes, I believe this is manufactured for the sake of a story, although, everyone dies, and they don't always get to pick the spot where that happens. I have seen or heard of people that died in Health Clubs, Hair Salons, Movie Theaters, Bars,Restaurants, Trains, cars, busses, even the subway, etc and a few other places.
Ask the LEO's who visit here , how many corpses they have heard of or responded to, who were true suicides.

What would I call someone who has six months worth of food stockpiled?

A devout Mormon.
Thing is, the word stockpile implies more than is normal or necessary, a special reserve. It has a negative connotation. A stockpile of food is 'paranoid, wasteful, think of all the people who don't have enough' etc.

Also, what is normal is dependant heavily on each person's own culture and experience.

I've got a friend with a wine rack in his living room that at any given time has 8-12 bottles of wine. To my Mormon friend who sometimes goes over this seems like an excessive 'stockpile' of booze. But for someone who drinks wine this is quite normal, and I'd bet that there are many households in the USA with more than 3 bottles of booze in them and no DUI. Take some lack of exposure and some loaded vocabulary and the picture being painted is negative.
