Does this NIB gun looked used?

Comment:
The front of the cylinder looks very clean. None of my revolvers ever look like that again after I take them to the range for the first time.

Potential solution/answer:
A little action with a Scotch-Brite pad will bring it back to a factory-original appearance (fyi- i'm not condoning this practice, just stating what can be done)

Although advice given in good faith, do NOT use a scotch pad! Purchase a lead wipe away treated cloth, yellow tacky cloth, several manufacturers i.e. Birchwood Casey. Easy search on Amazon, around $5-$7 ballpark and you will most likely never buy a 2nd one.

Scotch pads etc. are old think I guess, I've had a lead wipe away cloth for 20+years. A small piece on the cylinder face and all the sooty color is gone, if you keep up with it, will greatly diminish/remove the expansion ring inside towards front of cylinder chambers. The good Lord's answer for stainless pistols, be VERY careful on blueing though:confused: but similarly good in barrel cleaning...

BTW I concur with the many, certainly looks NIB and proof fired to me, along with a minor quality control hiccup e.g. ''bur''.

Carry on!!

I would say it looks too close to call either way. Parts of it look NIB while others appear to be have slightly used (factory test fire?). At any rate if you bought it to shoot it I would say you're good to go.

I would not be surprised if that revolver has spent some time knocking around a retail display case. After all , you state that it is 20 years old.

Now that you have received all of this invaluable input, help us understand how good a deal you got ...?

Used, but very little. Maybe they decided after a few rounds of .44 Magnum that it was a bit too much and sold it off??? And what's with with bubble wrap? If they're going to claim that it's NIB they should have left the original paper with it.
The "Mountain Gun" versions of the 629 are popular and desirable. I'd be glad to own one. That's the perfect woods handgun in bear country....keep it and shoot it.

You have a beautiful gun! Can't visualize a turn line. Did you get it from the original owner? Guns typically change hands quite a bit. We're like women buying purses! And if this gun has changed hands "several" times, the story line tends to wander. Nonetheless, I'd call it NIB. What was the seller's GB ratings? If he has a lot of attaboys, I'd call it a day and take it out shooting! You did good!

Looked under the cushion and found the paperwork.

Did note that both the trigger and hammer appear to have the same discoloration which other pics of new, similar guns do not have. Odd.

I don't think I got a great deal on it, I think I got a fair deal. I think this gun a few years ago would be about $900-$1,000 according to folks in the know but I paid what I was willing to pay and am really happy I did. I don't see revolver prices going down anytime soon.

After reading suggestions on here about regretting not purchasing a gun I went for it and I think it was a wise decision. You don't see a lot of these guns NIB (supposedly) and who knows when another would come around, especially in time for this years bear and deer hunting season which I want to use it for.

After selling this gun the dealer, a large dealer with positive ratings on Gunbroker put a similar gun on sale for $350 more. He must have felt emboldened after selling mine for full asking price. However the new one he is selling is a 629-2 so it doesn't have the improvements that the 629-5 does yet he's asking more. So, I am happy with my purchase as long as it is as stated, NIB.

This is the dealer. Appears to have a good rating.

It only looks test fired by the factory. I would love to have one of those but its just not in the cards right now. But if you have the scratch and want it, like Pat Riot stated they will never make those like that again. And if you decide to sell it you will get all your money back and then some.

I'd chalk it up to manufacturing error rather than being "used". My colt trooper was pretty used but I got it through the manufacturer.

Yeah, I paid like $1100 for my 65-3 and now can't get $750 for it with accessories. Could be I'm supposed to keep it.

Where is the smudge?

First picture. In the V between the rear of the trigger guard and the overmold of the grip. Could be image trickery as well. But the finish in that area looks different than the rest.

Are you talking about a S&W model 65-3 357 magnum with fixed sights in Stainless Steel? They are running between $500 and $600 for the most part on GB now. I have one I bought about 8 years ago off GB for $280. A police turn in that looked like new but with after market grips.

Even if it is called NIB you are at least the 2nd owner so technically it is "used"

It looks GREAT, don't lose any sleep over it. Once you shoot it it will be all dirty and then you can sell it to me a used used:)

If that revolver had passed through my hands to sell, I would've listed it "unfired, like NIB" without even second-guessing myself. Everything looks to be as it should be on a 20 year old S&W.

And that's today's market price. With holsters etc I had it listed for $750 but I don't mind if it doesn't sell. That K and 2 J's are all I have left in 357

I can't tell if new or used from a monitor away. But over several years the photos I've seen of Fugate firearms offerings in general, along with their descriptions, look right on to me. FWIW, every new gun I can recall purchasing was fired by the manufacturer. None were ever cleaned prior to shipping. The dirtiest I can recall receiving was a German SIG P210....
