Does Wal Mart sell handguns in some states? Or only long guns?

Here in NJ they don't sell any guns/ammo, in NC they sell long guns.

I'm pretty sure they don't sell handguns anymore. I think it has something to do with the Columbine shooting and the following Michael Moore movie.

They used to sell everything firearm related. However, since Sam Walton died, the MBA's and lawyers have taken over the corporation and Wally World has quit selling any firearms altogether, in a lot of places.
Sam Walton was a friend of shooters. His corporate heirs are not. Mind you, Walmart Canada, while they don't sell firearms(too much government BS) and pay their workies minimum wage, with little training, made the Juno Beach Centre, in Normandy, possible. Donated 2 million Cdn dollars to make it happen. Our idiot government, at the time, did nothing. Our rectal orifice PM, of the time, was right there for the opening though.

Depends on the locale, I think. I don't think any of them sell handguns anymore.

Most (2/3, I'd say, from experience) still sell rifles and shotguns. But nothing exotic - 10/22's, Remington shotguns, maybe the occasional 700, etc. The rural stores are more likely to sell reloading supplies.

A strange thing happened at my local Wally World though... a couple years ago they stopped selling guns (likely due to its semi-proximity to several large housing projects in Covington). Then a couple months ago *all* of the ammo was hidden out of sight, and had to be asked for.

More recently, some of the ammo is back on display shelves instead of behind the counters. And as of two days ago, they now have a bunch of muzzleloaders - including bullets, powder, and rifles - in plain sight.

The ammo stock hasn't improved much though :cuss:

The Alabama Wal-Marts stopped selling handguns in the mid 1980s. We were told then that is was corporate policy. I bought a 4" blued S&W Model 57-1 in .41 mag for $260. Ammo cost 15% the cost of the gun.

The Walmart in Fairbanks sells rifles, shotguns, pistols and
revolvers. It's got your Glocks, Smiths, Tauri, etc. You
can also special order out of their catalog, which takes
about 10 minutes to order, and less than a week to arrive.
The people that work that department seem to know what
they are doing. The only complaints are that they never
have enough bulk ammo. People like me keep buying
it all up.:D

I've also heard the stores in Alaska sell handguns.

We need a few AK members to tell us what those stores sell.

Edit:
I didn't see Carne Frio's post until after I hit the PQR button.

The Walmarts around me don't even sell firearms at all anymore... They do carry a very limited supply of ammo, but it sure isn't like it used to be!

Question to all who live near Wal-Mart stores that don't sell firearms. If your store carried popular brands of firearms, would they be good sellers? Would it be a profitable endeavor?

I think you just asked the key question.

Often it's easy to decide that this is all political, but Wal Mart is one of the very best companies at figuring out what sells and what doesn't.

The lack of rifles, or ammo, or whatever from region to region is probably more of the market than anything political.

Hard to say, since Bloomberg and his buddies still claim they are the reason Wal Mart got out of the handgun business.

Maybe a little of both.

I asked that question that particular way so as not to poison the answers. IF there is a ready market for gun sales and it would be a viable market, then the decision to cease gun sales would have to be political or at LEAST not based on profit margin.

In my location, I don't think firearms would be a great seller. Most people I know who buy guns go to 1 or 2 of the local shops. Even Dicks sporting goods doesn't move a lot in the way of firearms by me.

First let me say I'm a store manager for Wal-Mart........we don't sell handguns.
Also, only stores that rank in the top 5-10% of sales in the country are authorized to sell guns according to current policy.

I am in N.C. and none of the stores in the triad area sell long guns or handguns. They did at one time sell long guns but not anymore. Heck I can't even get ammo at my local store. It's like they have someone telling their buddies when it's coming in and they buy it all up before anyone else gets a chance to get any.

Here in Canada Wally World if funny. We have stores that sell ammo and scopes and then we have stores that don't sell scopes and we have stores that once in a while take all the ammo off the shelf for a while and then its back again. Here in Quebec the stores sell different things then I am used to back in Alberta where I am from. They never did sell guns except pellet guns.
With our dumb gun laws in Alberta in one store it was hard to buy ammo because they never had anybody old enough at times to be able to. They paid so poor that they could only get kids to work there.

Wow, 5 of those "top ranking" stores are right here in Albuquerque. Those are tough odds I would say.

Its kinda weird around here, the one that is authorized to sell them doesnt ever have anything in stock dropped by last night had 6 or 7 in the case. No ammo except for some .22 CCI and some obscure rifle calibers like 22-250 and one 257 roberts. Now the ones without the guns get all the ammo they can on a weekly basis, usually 5 or 6 cases of 9mm/45 ACP/ 40 and sometimes 223. I have never seen anyone man the counter at the one that sells guns the others have designated sporting goods guys
