"...rented a .475 Linebaugh built on a ruger frame to shoot. "

What range manager in his right mind would rent out a weapon like that to a couple fitting the description given?

Looks can be deceiving?
You can't judge a book by it's cover?
Store policy not to discriminate?
Same guy has rented it before and hasn't killed himself (yet)?
Doesn't care just wants to make money?

The answers are as varies as they days are long.

Wait, he ran out and left his GF abandoning her?

All I can picture is Peter on The Family Guy, or Homer from The Simpsons seeing a person just laid out on the floor, out like a light, and then he runs out.

Seriously though, people who do this kind of crap make me angry.

I took a female frind shooting one day. She is 5'7" and about 115 lbs. She enjoyed my Ruger SP101, but really liked the trigger on my S&W 460V. So what I like to do for the first 2 or 3 cylinders is load two standard preasure 45 Colts, one 45 Colt +p, then a 454 Casull, and then top it off with a 460 mag. It illustrates the progression of the cartridge development. Then I clean her out with a bore snake quick and start loading full cylinders of 460 mag, then full cylinders of 454, ...... Don't want a pressure build up due to carbon rings.

Anyway, I first had her watch me shoot it. Boom, Boom, BAM, Ka-Boom, and finally "Really..... come on". I had her stand at about 70 degrees to the side, so she felt the cuncussion. I wanted her to be fully aware of what she was about to do. And I made sure she was using proper technique and form.

She fired the Colts off without a problem. Then I waved my arms and said, "Here comes a big one! Hold on!" She indicated she knew what was coming. When she pulled the trigger and the gun fired, she looked at me with her eyes like saucers, and said "I don't want to do a bigger one!" And my response was "Then you shouldn't." and I took the gun back. I fired the 460 round and all was well.

Women can handle large bore magnum revolvers just fine, WITH PROPER INSTRUCTION. However, NO ONE should ever be pushed to shoot any gun or cartridge they are uncomfortable with..... for any reason. Kudos to the OP for helping her out.

I have no tolerance for men who put anyone in harm's way for their own amusement. And if he was truly that ignorant, I hope he has learned his lesson.

And I hope the guy who rented it to them learned too. You don't just hand a gun like that to anyone, no questions asked. You need to at least ask if they have ever shot the caliber before. You also need to make sure they are aware of the gases that will come barreling out of the barrel cylinder gap.

No excuse for putting this girl in harms way.

I agree the range manager was an idiot and the young man was an a__[if the story is true]. I have taught all my children and grandchildren to shoot. At some point all of the older ones have wanted to shoot my 454 and they enjoyed the experience. They enjoyed because a lot of time was taken to teach each how to handle a revolver. I have never been to a commercial indoor range so I am not familiar with the protocol but something seems amiss.

Yeah, way to take someone who is obviously interested in shooting and make a very unpleasant experience/memory for them and maybe turn them off of the sport entirely. :banghead:

Someone should just pistol whip them and then ask, "How did that feel?"

Oy Gevalt, that is ridiculous. That is a tort against the boyfriend if ever I saw one. Seriously my fiancee shoots .357 magnum and .45 ACP but that's her limit. Mind you she curls 30lb dumbells and benches over 155 so she's not a shrinking violet or anything (I train her). Maybe one day .44 Magnum tops when she starts curling 40lb bells and benches 185 but she's not really interested in that caliber.

Guns are dangerous in the hands of the wrong/stupid people and people need to have a little more respect for them and appreciation for what harm they can wreak when used negligently, idiotically, carelessly.

As far as the hammer hitting her head and lodging in her brain. I could see the trauma of the impact possibly killing her. Head injuries can be deceptive and rather mystiying.

I can't believe there's guys here calling BS on the story! The OP clearly stated he was there and saw it happen, why would anyone doubt him?

If the BF rented the gun, then his identity is known. This is a case that meets the standards of Reckless Endangerment and should be prosecuted as such.

The worse thing about these incidents is a possible black-eye (recoil is not going to lodge the gun into her brain) possible dmg to the gun when she drops it, and of course her never wanting to shoot again.

Recoil is not going to kill an adult in good health; its still a pretty crappy thing to do to someone though.

Come on now, listen, I'm a hot dude in my 20s and I like to wear flat-brimmed ball caps and Oaklies (inside) with my Tap-Out T-shirt and can of Monster in my hand. I let my babe shoot my .500 S&W scandium frame mountain gun with 500 grain maximum handloads.

Sure she blacked out for a few hours from the hammer spur embeding into her forehead, but I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm even cooler now from this experience.

Excuse me while I go take a shower to wash off all the testosterone my body had been excreting all day.

I laughed for 2 minutes straight when I read that.

Classic!

@ stressed. Seriously, lol, its not everyday you get to rent a revolver like that! I don't think I'd pass that to anyone else because I wouldn't wanna share...

I also laughed out loud when I read the testosterone filled post by cool.

If people really want to know the range, pm me and I will send the name to you, however I will not post their info out in public, As far as the people who say BS, they have the right to believe whatever they want, everything I said I saw happen, Also I didnt say the girl was killed, but you have to wonder with a front sight hitting you right in the head probably could kill you, but luckily it missed her . My wife after hearing this incident wants to learn how to handle the bigger stuff, so next range visit we will start her out on my ruger superblackhawk with some heavyish .44 spls and If she and I feel she can handle it maybe one or two magnums.

Actually it can in some instances. For example there has been a death or two with heavy recoiling double action revolvers when the extreme recoil caused a double tap with the second shot hitting the shooter. Here is one such incident.

http://www.mrcolionnoir.com/news/wo...ng-herself-in-the-head-at-missouri-gun-range/

Bottom line, handing an inexperienced person a heavy recoiling gun isn't funny. Not only are you risking turning someone sour on an amazing hobby, the consequences can be very serious.

Paul your right no reason to turn people off. Ease friend and family into shooting and we can get more people enjoying the shooting sports.

Also adding fake stories to the already real ones doesn't help gun rights or the shooting sports.

People go from one extreme to the next.

The guy was obviously not a gentleman of good character (respecting forum policies on language there).

However:

- it's highly unlikely that the front sight would have "killed her if it lodged in her brain" (or rather, highly unlikely that the front sight would have lodged in her brain at all).
- the range manager would be crazy to deny rental of the gun because the couple fit some stereotypical description
- to suggest that the guy should or would be prosecuted for "reckless endangerment" is crazy

He played a "trick" that really wasn't that funny and probably turned off a new shooter for life and ruined any potential relationship he had going. In short, like the title says, "Don't be that guy.", but there are levels of outrage between 0 and "lock him up and throw away the key!".

The guy steps back and runs out of the range, My brother ran to the girl and helped her to a chair and we called ems and as far as we know she is alright just has a mild concussion, we didnt see or hear from that guy again

So Mr. Stud-Muffin bails on the lady the second something happened? This may have been a good thing. This should give the lady in question a very good idea of what kinda a man(?) he really is.

I hope the lady will be OK, and finds a real gentleman friend.

That fellow needs a good old fashioned lesson in how to treat a lady right after he gets a good healthy does of A$$ Whoopin.

My wife's uncle was watching the BIL's shoot one of their Blackhawks in 44 magnum. Well after several cylinders full by the both of them, he simply couldn't resist, and just had to shoo the thing. He was walked through everything about the recoil and had just watched them both shoot the thing close to 20 times each, so there shouldn't have been much doubt about that part. First round he pulled the trigger on hit the bull dead center, and the muzzle nailed him right in the middle of his nose knocking him out like a light.

After we got him in the chair and he came around with the cold rag holding his nose closed, he was swearing at us like we had set him up. When he got home from the ER and getting the split closed up he was a bit more, "well I should have known it was going to do that, I had been watching for half an hour or so."

I agree that folks need to be brought into things like this slow and deliberately. With my oldest grandson, and his step brother, we shoot my Blackhawk in M1 Carbine, and the GP-100 loaded with both target grade DEWC loads as well as some full magnum loads. That said I don't just throw in a handful and away we go. We work up to the hotter rounds so that they know what is coming and are prepared for it when it does.

"- the range manager would be crazy to deny rental of the gun because the couple fit some stereotypical description.."

mgmorden - C'mon - we are not talking about voting rights here - we are talking about personal safety and the continuing protection of our 2'nd Amendment rights! Should we be afraid to "profile" in this situation? Why endanger people and give ammo to the anti-gun movement by arming idiots beyond their level of competency? What is to be lost by saying , "Sorry , I reserve my right to not serve you."? For goodness sakes - bartenders are dragged into court for NOT taking that stance.

C'mon indeed. The group most notorious for that sort of "joking" is your classic movie-stereotype upper middle class frat boy. Drives a porsche, wears polo shirts, plays golf even though he is under 75. The guy in this story didn't fit that profile so the range had no specific articulable reason to expect unsafe pranks. They had no reason to deny service and should not have. Do they have a right to? Sure. They have a right to close altogether if they want. That doesn't mean they should.
