Hey how y'all doing?

A friend of mine brought his fathers shotgun by to show me,an old percussion muzzle loader, damascus barrels a wall hanger only. I looked it over for markings, and the only one found was on the left lock BLUEGRASS.Being from the Louisville Kentucky area I'm familiar with Belknap Hardware, now defunct for many years but was a major provider for hunting equipment in the south.

My friend is around 80 yrs old and that said, I'm wondering if any one has info that Belknap was selling their BLUEGRASS brand that far back.

His father was a native of North Carolina, in the Bryson City area, and probably used this shotgun to hunt the Great Smoky Mountian area before the park was born.

Would sure like to have some information to pass on to him, as I have been an avid listener to many of his storys of the life in that reigon .

Any replys will be greatly appreciated!

Bluegrass: Trade name used by the Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville, Kentucky on shotguns they retailed.

Bluegrass Arms Company: Trade name of shotguns made by H. & D. Folsom Arms Co. for Belknap Hardware of Louisville, KY.

That is not to say an old percussion damascus double couldn't have been imported from Belgium or somewhere and marked with a trade-name. Tons of them were back then.

You would have to remove the barrels from the stock and look for proof-marks on the bottom of the barrels to say for sure where it orginated.

It may seem odd today when muzzle loaders are basically big boys' toys, but there were a fair number of muzzle-loading rifles and shotguns sold and used for hunting as late as WWI. The old timers thought the new-fangled cartridges and shells were too expensive and too hard to find in the back country, so they stuck with what they knew. Many of the gun writers of the 1930's and 40's told of doing their first hunting with "granpap's" muzzle loader.
