Does anyone have any experience with Double Tap ammo?

Specifically I am looking for some ammo that live up to the performance expected of the 10mm, in a factory load. It will be shot in a G20C and a EAA Witness full size. I will use the rounds for informal target shooting and as a carry gun in the car (probably different loads, but still want full power, not the FBI stuff).

For those unfamiliar with the capabilities of the 10mm, I compare the commercially available (“shelf”) 10mm ammo to a hotter .40 S&W load.

You can buy with confidence from Mike. High quality for a reasonable (for 10mm!) price. I’ve used DT ammo in my Springfield Omega, Glock 20, and IAI Javelina with excellent results.

No, I won them all, every one I own. I've never had to purchase a handgun. My shooting ability is so superior to most mortals Manufacturers BEG me to shoot their firearms. They guys at Sig rent a house next door to me just to be ready to hand me their latest creation.

As I was schooling Matt Burkett and Rob Leatham they were teasing me about not having to buy my own handguns, but I told them, they were just jealous.

The worst part about all of this is I just ribbed some other guy in another thread over his typo.

Does anyone have any experience with Double Tap ammo?

I've shot a lot of it; especially the 10mm. I currently have 15 or 20 boxes of it sitting around here somewhere. Mike's always a great guy to deal with and his product is top-notch.

One thing to consider when you're shooting HOT 10mm like DT in your Glock on a regular basis..... get a heavier return spring!! I use a 20# when I have my 6" Jarvis pipe in there and a 22# with the factory barrel. While all of his ammo is below the SAAMI ceiling, it is hot stuff. The slide on the Glock will operate at an accelerated rate and bottoms out a little harder than normal. I know a guy who shot several thousand rounds of DT though his G20 and bent the metal inserts that the slide rides on.

It has nothing to do with DT, it's the constant cycling at a higher rate with a spring weight that Glock uses all the way down to 9mm and 45 ACP weapons. It's a little light for true 10mm loads..... with a 6" barrel there's a little more weight and a 20# will do, but with the factory barrel I always use a 22#. A spring designed to work in the 9mm and 45 is not well-suited for stuff that ventures into mid-range .41 mag territory.

DT is good stuff, I shoot it in both my Glock 10mm's, a 20 and a 29, both with SS guide rods and 22 pound Wolfe springs.

That being said, DT still lacks one thing, a Silvertip load. To scratch that itch go to www.reedsammo.com. Like DT, Reeds is good people.

DoubleTap makes great ammo, just as good as Buffalo Bore but you get 50 rounds of DT for the price of 20 rounds of BB.

Stuff is great. If you load it with other brands in the same mag, there is a noticeable difference in power/recoil, and I would therefore assume velocity too.

Both Buffalo Bore and DoubleTap make great ammo and I feel they are mostly equal. All you need to do is go to both sites and compare reported velocities and energy. BUT, remember to look at the length of the barrel used in the assessment. Make sure you are comparing equal length barrels to see if the ammo is truly equal. Double Tap and Buffalo Bore.

Buffalo Bore does have some new ammo out this year. They have standard velocity Short Barrel and Heavy .38 Special Self Defense rounds available as well as some other special stuff like 9mm+P+ and low recoil .44 Magnum ammo.

On the other end Double Tap has bulk sale ammo available so you can spend less while being able to practice with your carry ammo without going totally broke. You can buy 50 rounds of 125 gr .357 Magnum for $25.95 and get 500 rounds of the same for $234.95. I don't know of any other top makes who sells quantity at a discount.

I really like DT's 9mm 147gr and 357 158gr ammo.
Its all premium ammo - buy and shoot with confidence. More importantly - its some of the best stuff you can get for SD ammo IMO.

DT is good stuff. I've shot a few of the DT 10mm offerings and like the WFNGC 230 grainers for woods carry.

I've used Reed's also, and Reed offers true 10mm spec rounds just like DT does. No experience with BB to comment.

Federal Hydrashok 10mm is simply a long 40, if you check out their charts, you'll note the specs are identical. Same can be said for American Eagle plinking fodder. Maybe a touch hotter than the .40 fodder, but 500ft-lbs is not full power in the 10mm. The Federal (amer. eagle) brass has been the stoutest reloading stock I have yet to find however. I have had many a starline case split on me during it's second reloading, even below full power spec. And not just split at the mouth that would indicate I belled it too liberally or such.

What do you think about the G20 loaded with Double Tap 200's or 230's as a sidearm in bear country in the lower 48?

I am heading to NW MT later this year and am considering this as a sidearm while elk/deer hunting in bear country (both black & grizz). I realize my .300 WBY will be all the gun I need for protection, but I want to take a sidearm along anyway. I have always shot Glocks somewhat well and am pretty familar with them. Yes, a revolver in 44 or 45 would be better, but what are your opinions about the 10mm with heavy loadings for protection?
