Note to dog owners:

If you are going to have a large-breed dog which is of a type "known" to be aggressive, don't name it "Cujo". Likewise, "Fang", "Killer", "Baby-Shredder" or "Rabies" should be crossed off the list.

If the unthinkable happens and your dog actually bites someone, it just plain doesn't look good to stand there saying "Cujo is such a little sweatheart. He'd never hurt a fly." Much better to be saying "I can't believe Ginger/Max/Buddy behaved this way. (S)He's never done that before."

Now, I don't know how intelligent dogs are, or whether they can sense danger when it's bearing down on them, but this pit bull took off like a hot rod on nitrous oxide. Maybe he knew what a gun was. Nobody knows.

No kidding. There have been several times I've tried to retaliate against a dog that was being aggressive and they knew I meant them harm. Whether it was picking up a rock, picking up a stick, pointing a can of OC at them, etc., they instinctively knew and took off.

Nearly two decades ago, I did a lot of jogging. On my 6-7 mile stretch every night, there were 2 or 3 dogs that I would occasionally encounter. If I wasn't carrying any kind of deterrent (stick, etc.), a dog would run out, wanting a pound of flesh. If I was running with a solid stick in my hand (which I did often), no dog would cause ANY trouble.

An interesting observation - One night, I had a large can of OC in my hand while jogging. A large dog bolted out of a carport and ran up the owner's yard to the street at me, growling and barking, like he was ready to attack (or was at least trying to impress the other neighborhood dogs...). I sprayed the OC at him, when he was about 10-15 feet away. He stopped like he had hit a wall and retreated, BEFORE the OC even hit him and ran off. I couldn't believe how quick he reacted.

Man-against-dog stories... Always interesting...

Yeah, I was just thinking... We hear a lot of stories of how sometime dogs that are normally docile family pets get let out at night at run in packs. I wonder what would happen if this dog's pack would come across one of the dog owners and innitiate an attack. Would this owner's dog defend his owner or join the attack?

Police shoot dogs on a regular basis, SOME are maybe even justified. Around the Austin area they kill family pets on a regular basis. If they show up for an alarm call -there goes your dog in the yard or the house.
These are well documented and often witnessed events. There was a cop that was "shunned" out of his neighborhood here as he killed a family pet running along with the bicycling family because it ran into his yard to greet him. The neighborhood got them to remove the bus stop near his home as they felt he was a danger to the children there. One of my neighbors who was a LEO joked about it, he said why take any chance to see if a dog was agressive?
There are almost monthly complaints about it here on the news. It seems like a percentage of LEO'd knowingly or sub-conciously love to get the chance to shoot something at any excuse. My wife and I both have talked about in an emergency after calling 911 to get outside and wait in the yard for response to minimize any risk to our dogs if police respond.
Yes, of course I'd call a cop over a hippie if I needed help...
Yes, I know they are mostly the best humans on the planet...
Yes, I know there are TWO sides to everything and non-cops are ALWAYS wrong...

I've had Rottweilers. One was a 100 pound female that was such a terror that neighborhood kids would left themselves in to the fenced back yard and ride on her like she was a pony. Of course the dogs were ALWAYS watched. Dogs are animals and large dogs can play rough. I've had Dobermans. One was a male and my foster son kicked him in the groin. That poor dog laid down and cried for a bit, but never did anything for the unjustified attack. The dog took it better than I would have. The dog could have easily done a lot of damage. I work in poor parts of town and see a lot of dogs that just want to bite everything. I had a dog ripping at my pants leg while the owner assured me it wouldn't bite me. Dogs should have lots of contacts with lots of people that are positive to their development. Hunting dogs can be a problem, but my experience has been they are much more friendly than house pets. It seems to me that the biggest cause of vicious dogs is the owners

As the owner of 3 Chow Chows, I can tell you that they can be as gentle as a womans touch, depending on if you have people around them alot . I believe some people have a false perception and that gives those individuals the fight or flight. I know that if an individual makes an "aggressive move" towards my dogs... I will make an aggressive move towards them. 1. On Privet property those such individuals will be warned or be detained for criminal tresspass. As for City Police shooting dogs on privet property... they can be asked to leave or the shift supervisor will be called. Shooting a dog on privet property without warant "Officer safety" will mean that the Officer, the Officers Department or both may be under law suit.

Hahaha!!!

"Flipper! Go get get the boat. Dad is stuck at the bottom of the bay and he's running out of air! Be sure to fill the spare air tank on the boat, before you crank it and drive back out here. I'll wait on Sandy to get back from town. Now, hurry!"

Martinek, meanwhile, fired two shots that missed both dogs, including one shot that ricocheted off the street and pierced a back and side window of a 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe owned by 45-year-old Lorri Martin, who lives two doors away from Mitchell and Smith. The bullet also pierced a window of Martin's home, and, according to Martin, was retrieved by a police officer from a sill inside.

Well, I see someone's been skipping their range time...
