My quest for a new hunting rifle may have come to an end. I recently acquired a Browning AB3 in 300wm.

It's decidedly more horsepower than I need for coyote, javalina and deer here in the southwest, but it's got a lot of features that I wanted in a hunting rifle and in a pretty nice package.

It looks like if I really wanted to put the pedal to the metal, I could push a 150gr to 3200-3300fps but something around 2900fps sounds much more pleasant.

I poked around Alliant's website and it looks like RL15 may work well. A max charge of 64gr giving 3058fps from a 24" barrel (mine's a 26"). I already have RL15 (and IMR4064 &3031 on hand) which is serendipitous.

I'm not too hung up on 2900fps as a magical number, if I hit 3k+ and accuracy is excellent and recoil not abusive, I'll be tickled pink. Just a "thereabouts" number.

So what powders are you guys using to take a little off the top on the 300? I may also go ahead and thread the muzzle for a break, I hunt with earpro so the increase noise shouldn't be a significant issue.

Hodgdon's website shows starting loads for IMR4064 of 60.0 & 61.0 (two different bullets) yielding about 3000 fps. Sounds like starting with RL15 would be a better bet since IMR 4064 is starting at the velocity you want and will increase from there.

@wombat13

That's what I'm thinking. Accuracy is usually best near the top of the load range, hopefully I can find a node near, but under the max load of RL15.
I'd strongly suggest a 165 with 4166, the win mag rifles generally agree better with heavier bullets, and 4166 is pretty consistent with accuracy at dead middle of the road charges. 59.5(ish gr) pushing the 165 just over 3000 from your 26" barrel should be pretty pleasant. From an 8.5lb scoped rifle, looking at just a smidge over 23 ft lbs of recoil. According to uncle hawks' table, that matches a .30-06 ai 180. Throw on a good recoil pad and be happy!
