I had problems before shooting HSM .308 reloads and Malaysian 7.62 surplus as the casings would get stuck and the extractor would rip off a chunk of the rim of the spent casing. Had to pound them out with a cleaning rod. Comparing the Federal with the HSM and Malaysian rounds, the Federal definitely has less bullet setback and shorter overall length then the other rounds. I then shot only new Federal American Eagle, shot about 60 rounds. Today I take it to the range, run a box of Federal through her and then tried the Malaysian surplus again.
It functioned perfectly now with the Malaysian surplus, put about 35 rounds of it through the rifle. I was just sighting in at 100 yards and shooting for function more than accuracy. I was able to hit my 6" steel target every shot though. Recoil is the most I have experienced from a semi-auto .308, but not too much more than a light weight 7.62x39 AK. The rubber M4 recoil pad made it more pleasant. I changed the DPMS muzzle brake/wannabe flash surpressor for a Vortex flash surpressor and it almost completely cut down any muzzle blast that it had with the DPMS brake before.
Next time i go out I'm going to shoot this steel target at 200 yards. It sure it nice to know that it will shoot cheap surplus now instead of the 50 cents a shot stuff. I also ordered an Aimpoint clone today for $65, I'm sure I'll try it out on my AP4 as well as my AK's. I'll have to get a better/updated picture soon:
