I'm considering having my 870 drilled and tapped for a scope mount at a local gunsmith.

However, I'm a little confused.

Do I simply ask to have it "drilled and tapped" and then I go out and buy my own scope base?

Or are there 870-specific bases?

You can buy a scope rail for your 870.Your gunsmith may have one and can
use it for the hole location in your receiver.I know it's expensive, but you
might want to look into a barrel with a cantilever scope mount. That way
you dont have to drill your gun,and it can still be used as a regular shotgun
with a regular barrel. You will have two guns in one.

WK,

You going the full-bore specialty turkey gun route, or shooting slugs? If it's slugs, ask him about drilling and tapping a short screw thru the top of the receiver into the barrel extension while he's at it, to lock down the barrel too. Won't matter so much with shot loads.

Ask the 'smith if he'd rather pick out the base, or maybe make one from stock. Hole spacing may be a consideration given the contour of the top of the receiver on the inside. The cantilevered mount barrel might be an idea if you can find one that is smoothbore for turkeys. A lot of those are rifled, for shooting sabot slugs. Dunno a lot about those myself, never messed with them much. There's an old two-piece cantilever barrel that came on my 11-87 that is smoothbore, I took the cantilever arm off and mounted a 1.5X Burris EER 'scope scout style on the base and that's my only experience with them.

Stay safe,

Hold the phone!!!
I have found the $35.00 dollar (with rings) Weaver converta side mount, especially the see under version for rifled sighted slug guns, to be the BEST & STURDIEST system there is, and I have tried others. There is NO drilling or tapping necessary it replaces trigger unit pins. Only down side is no side saddle on left side (you CAN use a 4 round one on right side too) :)

I had planned to mount a fixed Leupol 4x scope to use for both 1) deer hunting with my rifled slug barrel and 2) turkey hunting with the factory 21" RemChoke barrel.
I'll have to look into the Weaver converta mount.
My only concern is that it will require me (notwithstanding the added height provided by the Monte Carlo stock) to lift my head too far above the cheekpiece and will skew proper cheek weld to the stock.

Get the low converta mount -Midway (and other's) sell them as of recently. 4X sounds like alot for a shotty,2x is about right. I use the Aimpoint ML2 in an Arms lever mount on mine, it also goes on my M forgery. :)
