Driving deer out of private land!

I live in IL. , Ived hunted on family land for 39 yrs. But what I seen this last season really pissed me off! I was sitting in my favorite stand for hours waiting for a deer to come by, when I hear trucks driving up into our woods. Then yelling and banging on metal to scare the deer! Now this was a first for me! I climbed down went around the edge of our land, to see three vehicles running off. Yes, I called it in! I was so mad, but I did the right thing! Its bad enough that drunken poachers mark deer trails next to roads with beer cans. But in broad daylight to open a gate drive up into the woods and drive out deer, what the heck! Are they that stupid they cant track deer, or find trails? Or maybe they dont know <deleted> about hunting! I make time for hunting, its my favorite time of the year "deer season", I take my kids,and next year my wife and next inline son. What kind of crap does this show them, its okay to trespass and drive deer if you can get away with it?

We are protected from this in Indiana. Does The People's Republic of Illinois have a similar law?

Sounds like a deer drive to me. They push the deer into a line of hunters waiting on the edge of an open space and they shoot whatever comes out.

Agree 100% they're driving the deer. Not peta; op said they were driving trucks and beating on metal (not driving smart cars & beating on bongos).

At one time, I leased a hay field that was the favorite place for local kids to spin around when it snowed. It caused a lot of damage to the field. Due to terrain, there was one access to this field. I stripped back a couple of sections of sod and placed 2x6’s with 16p nails at the access point. Just keep in mind these guys will be upset when they flatten their tires (assuming they come back).

Probably a better option would be to set a trail cam that would get their tag #’s. Then you could press charges. Around here, property that’s ‘posted’ at the county court house makes it easier to press charges.

Wouldn't matter in Texas. Not sure the laws elsewhere, but here, trespass is just that, signs or no signs.

Thanks for the replies everyone, yes the land is posted! Il-dnr was called, now we are putting cables, locks and new gates up! Everyone around home knows, so they are looking, talked to others and they have had the same problems. We have one more season, we will see if it happens again! I got my plan, no tires no escape!

we've used the nails in boards trick before. At the very least they'll leave with ruined tires.

If some one get hurt on the trap you can be held liable for their injure. This has happen more than you know of even when trespassing. The trail cam is the way to go you might see things that you do not know that is there.

about 12 years ago in South Texas (Duval county) some guys on my lease watched as a helicopter herded deer onto another ranch, meanwhile a crew building a high fence went to work right behind them, effectively rounding up deer and putting them behind a high fence. our lease went to nil after that.

During Oct. 2010 I made my 1st Western big game hunt in Colorado. We were unguided on public land, with lots of private ranches around. Lots of public land to hunt, but you do have to be careful of property lines.

We noticed that there were miles of barbed wire fence laying on its side. Ranchers, and their employees were using horses and 4 wheelers to funnel migrating elk through the openings and onto the private property where paying guests were hunting. Once the elk were on the private property they patrolled the boundries trying to keep them there.

After hunting season the fences go back up

put up signs saying no trespass with out permission. then block off the roads.

Once we wer laying down a foundation on my dads land for a hunting lodge. it was in winter time so we used a tarp to cover it, and antifreeze. we blocked off the road except the the right where the camp was going up.

Couple of idiots ignored the sign, drove their truck into the cement and got stuck. State got them for Trespass, Destruction of property, hunting without a license, trapping without a license, and operating a vehicle with out a license.

I would avoid posting posts about laying down "booby" traps and such. However local land owners do do the likes on their roads they dont want people on that are posted. but the likes of which arnt obvious or with intent to harm.

Illinois has laws against interfering with a lawful hunt and also tresspass laws.
DNR in Illinois is stretched so thin they will not likely be where you need them when you need them. Might help to get pics and/or license plate numbers, etc.

Dunno what fence height has to do with neighborliness. And for all the excitement they cause in some people, they wouldn't make up a percent of a percent of all the miles of fencing...

But worrying about that sort of trivia is off-topic for the thread, anyway.

Art, what I was saying is that deer, open range behind regular heighth barbed wire fence are driven into property behind a high fence they cant escape that is a different story, those deer that belong to the state of Texas (that a poacher has to pay restitution for) then all of a sudden become the property of the landowner of the high fence property. what I was saying is they were driven off private free range property on to high fence property.
