I currently own a mossberg 590 A1 (purchased in 2013) and a Ruger SR45 (purchased in 2014). I went to Turners Outdoorsman last week and purchased a Ruger AR 556. I started the DROS process and within a few days, had a call back from turners telling me that I recieved a "denied" from the DOJ. I was in shock.

I am not a felon. I have never been 5150'd. There are no restraining orders against me. I am not a fugitive from justice. I have two misdemeanors that were years ago, but neither one are disqualifying (not domestic violence or drug related). Not to mention I DROSed two other firearms after these petty misdemeanors.

I work for the U.S. Department of Vererans Affairs. I am a OIF/OEF veteran. A father of two who is never late with his child support. I don't understand why I feel like I did something wrong? Is there something I am missing here? I just picked up my .45 12 months ago... I have keep my nose clean, God's honest.

Does anyone have any idea as to why my beutiful AR 556 is being withheld from me?

I suggest asking this same question at http://www.calguns.net/

Here is a thread about DROS denials

Good Luck

It is likely that one or both of these have some indeterminate status, perhaps an arrest but no followup, or no indication of conviction and time served or fines paid.

CA DOJ has begun to demand buyers explain things that are very old, but they seem reluctant to be helpful and actually tell you what the issue(s) might be.

More info at calguns, as suggested.

ETA it is widely believed this is an artifact of directions from the elected leadership of the CA DOJ.

To all my California brothers: Go online to www.NRAILA.org and download the "Personal Firearms Eligibility Check Application" form. Print it up and go to a notary for a thumbprint and stamp per the instruction sheet with the form. Tack a $20.00 check to it and mail it in. The California DOJ will respond. This independent and separate move will provide you with pre-emptive intel. about your true eligibility status and recent proof of eligibility if you are denied for a purchase. As for rights lobbying, I think the most effective way to cause a change would be to lobby for return of the filing fee if the buyer did not make a mistake. NOTHING in California law trumps the, "who pays?", issue. If the DOJ had to return the money in subsequent filings they would make sure they didn't make a mistake; same in spades for the dealers. There is no fair way a person should have to pay for the mistakes of others. This tack is emotionless and even anti-gunners like my mother in law would be on our side.

Good luck all -
