Will dry firing an AR-15 cause any possible harm? In particular an S&W M&P Sport.

The AR 15 has a floating firing pin that, as a centerfire rifle, does not impinge on the frame. Accordingly, dry-firing will not hurt it.

Nope. Even if it broke something at parts are ludicrous cheap and dry fire practice is valuable

As long as you have the bolt in the gun and the firing pin in the bolt.

The only caution I could add is not to do it with the upper and lower disconnected, it will dent the aluminum at the bolt catch and can make the lower unserviceable.
