I got my new SA58 Para FAL about a week ago (after about 20 weeks wait for my build to be completed)...here's my "first impressions" review. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=289742&highlight=sa58+para
Since I received the rifle, here are the changes I've made to it:
Sadly, I didn't get the rifle out until this weekend to sight it in. After about 10 rounds to get the gas regulator set. Then I got the irons dialed in. EoTech came next. Here's two 3-shot, 50 yard groups with SA surplus. The elevation difference is me turning the front sight to get the range. I can't wait to get some match loads through her to see what she can do with those. Unfortunately I didn't have time to wring the rifle out at the 100/200 yard line.
Impressions after my sight in session:
Since I received the rifle, here are the changes I've made to it:
- Israeli forward assist charging handle - solves one of the things people say is "bad" about the FAL - no positive way to close the bolt
- GG&G Accucam QD mount for the EoTech - since the irons don't co-witness with the optics, this allows me to rip off the optics if I need to
- ITC cheekrest - gets your head up for the optics but allows good cheekweld for irons
- Viking weapons light mount - mounted on the left forward handguard...perfect position for my offhand thumb to hit
- Surefire G2 torch
- SAW grip
- Extended safety selector
- Handguard rail
- Phantom flash hider
- Extended bolt hold open
- Extended mag release
- Sand-cut bolt carrier
- Para tactical aperature sight
- Extended Extreme Duty scope mount
- EoTech 511

Impressions after my sight in session:
- The trigger still amazes me...hard to believe this is a FAL. It is pretty close to my NM trigger on my SA M1A Loaded
- The recoil was not noticiably different from my full size StG58A. I like the FAL's recoil cycle...long slow push vs the ka-chunck, ka-chunk of the M1A or the sharp rap of the HK-series
- I had a pretty hard time getting the mags to go in the mag well reliably...I'm hoping that this is the park-ing being pretty new...hopefully this will wear down. My StG doesn't have this problem.
- The folding stock is solid and comfortable. Good cheekweld...doesn't give anything up to a solid stock.
- FALs rock!
