I searched but can't find a thread on this.

What is a trigger stop? I think it physically stops the trigger from moving back unnecessarily far when firing, thus allowing a quicker reset. Am I close?

Also, on a revolver can you see this externally, or is it strictly internal?

Anyone had S&W do one for you, if so how did it turn out?

You are right in what it does.
Often it is a small screw, though I've seen small metal pieces permenantly attached. Some competition guns have adjustable trigger stops, IIRC.

I have one that came on a new S&W years ago. It is a small piece of steel behind the trigger. Works pretty well.

I think the trigger stops primary purpose is more for minimizing any further movement from the time the shot goes off to aid accuracy versus the quicker trigger reset.

Here is a picture of an S&W factory installed trigger stop on an S&W model 66. The white arrow is pointing to the trigger stop.

Trigger stops are an un needed target accessory. Just an extra part that will cause a problem when the screw loosens up and the thing prevents hammer fall. I have had that happen on a M686 and a customized M1911.

It is true that follow through is essential for target grade accuracy, and trigger stops are a way to help with consistent follow through, but it is not the only way. Practice does a lot more for scores than trigger stops
