My brother in law isn't all that into guns. He called me tonight, wanting to sell one that he has had for a while, calling it a "Ruger Blackhawk" but by his descriptions it is a ruger revolver, 357 mag, with a 6" barrel, stainless, can be loaded with a speedloader, and he bought it new 10 years ago. He cannot remember what it cost him to buy, and he fired a grand total of 20 rounds through it before putting it in the bottom of his gun cabinet and forgetting about it.

Now, I know you can't load a Blackhawk with a speed loader. I don't think it could be an SP-101 cause it isn't made with at 6" barrel, at least not now and no googling can turn one up.

Does this sound like a GP-100 to anyone else? If so, what would one matching that description be worth?

Thanks,

Rock

Could also be a Redhawk in 357 although they are rare in that caliber. As you said, it's probably a GP100. I'd take it off his hands for what he paid for it 10 years ago.

I paid $350 for mine new out the door a few years back. I doubt it would
have been much less than that, maybe a $50 difference if that. Prices were
not jumping that much back then.

Edit: The $50 difference is what I think at max his brother in law might have paid less
10 years ago.

I will get to see it this weekend, just looking for some ideas on a good price to offer him for it. I have a feeling that it is a double action, as he said he took 6 shots at a running doe with it - don't see him being coordinated enough to run a SA gun that fast. If its a GP-100, I will end up offering him $350 for it, with box and holster.

The Security Six is a great gun, if that is what it is. The GP-100 feels real good in my hand, but I have never fired one. They are reported to be great guns as well. $300 to $400 would be a good deal that I would jump on myself. He may not want that much since he would not have paid near that much 10 years ago. $350 for the GP-100 would be a good deal I think. Personally, I would give that for a basically new Security Six as well, but it should go for less, say $300.

Prices around here are high and we hardly ever see any decent Redhawks or Security Six's around here. GP-100's are plentifull, but high as well.

The last gun show a guy had a 4" 586 that must have been slid down an asphalt road or something and he wanted $375 for it!!!!! The sad part was he was not all that out of line with most of the vendors. They think they are selling gold bullion or something. There are deals, but you have to search and if you are looking for something in particular, it could be a long wait.

$350 would be a good price overall these days. I paid $350 for a new one in the spring of 2005. It was a 3"; the price for a 6" stainless should have been slightly more. The full retail price for a 6" GP100 in 1997 was $474 according to the 1997 Gun Digest (based on the 1996 catalog prices). The Redhawk model ran about $100 more retail, just in case you wanted to know. Street price usually ran about 30% less. So, prices would have ranged from $300 to $350 or so then. I'd offer somwhere around $325 cash or ask him what he wants for it.

If it turns out to be a single action Blackhawk, they were less with retail being about $360 for a blue one to $443 for a stainless one. You do the math.

I'm not suggesting you try to take advantage of your sister's husband as you will therefore be doing it to your sister by default.

Right - absolutely not. I'm not going to go cheap on him, I just was looking for a fair price. He says he can't remember what he paid for it, so I was looking to figure out what he could have paid, and offer accordingly.

He doesn't know what its worth, and selling to me is going to net him more than if he took it to a pawnshop.

$300-$350

is a fair price for a used GP100, maybe more towards the $350 end because it is SS.

I paid $275 for my 3" stainless GP100 almost exactly 10 years ago (the receipt I just came across the other day was dated 8/23/97), but it was used, manufactured in 1990 (according to the Ruger website serial number lookup).

I am going to agree with everyone else and say that $350.00 is probably around the right price to pay, especially if it is in good shape. If he only shot 20 rounds through it, maybe he could throw in some ammo too!
