Remington's website is down, so I can't check there for the info I need.

A coworker inherited a bunch of guns and mentioned selling a Remington semiauto rifle in 308 with a synthetic stock. He only wants $250 for it, but he doesn't know the model number.

I looked at a few sites like auction arms and gunsamerica, but I was unable to narrow down what model this could be.

Any ideas?

Remington
308
Synthetic stock
fairly inexpensive model?
semiauto

Thanks!

Probably a 742 variant. Chances are it is a 7400. In .308 for 250 bucks, if it is in good shape, I say go for it. Pretty much any good condition gun for $200 is worth a whirl. If you decide you don't like it, you could easily get your money back out of it. The 760 and 7600 are pump guns. They are great guns.

Sweet....that's about what I wanted to hear.

I think I'm going to look at it tonight. I have the cash already

From my poor old memory I think it was the 740 and 7400 lines that were semi autos. $250 is lower then what I've seen used ones in shops. Have no clue as to their reliability though.

Thanks fellas - I bought it.

It's a model 742 and looks almost identical to the picture posted earlier in the thread except it's camo, has a rubber butt pad and a scope mount already attached (No rings or scope though)

It's pretty dirty but I think I'm trading favors with Norton to get it cleaned up for me :neener:

Next question: It appears to have a 4 round detachable mag with it. Anybody make an 8 or 10 round mag for it?

You'll like it. I've had my 742 carbine for over 20 years. They are excellent rifles.

I've tried several plastic and metal 10 round magazines over the years. None I tried ever worked properly or reliably.
You're better off picking up a spare factory mag to keep in your coat pocket for a fast reload. They are readily available.

You're probably right.....

Since this is just going to be a range gun, the factory 4 round (5?) is probably better for me anyway. I'll appreciate each shot a little more.

I have a feeling this gun is going to kick a bit, since it seems light as a feather.

It's a shame I won't get to shoot it for a few weeks at best :( . Maybe I'll send it with Norton if he takes our father to the range in the next week or so.

It seems like semi's don't kick nearly as much as bolt- or pump-action guns. Shooting my M1 Garand is a lot easier on the shoulder than the 1903 Springfield, both 30-06.

Regards

Being a semi with a butt pad should make it tolerable. However, that's a hunting rifle, made to be easy to carry and only expected to be shot occasionally, hence the weight, or lack thereof.

I think a full day at the range will show how tough you are.

Congrats on a good buy on a fine rifle.

Or how yough I'm NOT....I'm generally not a recoil junkie, so I think this will be a fine gun to practice my marksmanship with, one slow shot at a time.

Thanks for the congrats!

From the looks of that barrel, it's going to take a while to get it cleaned up. Gun looks like it was shot a fair amount and then left to sit in the safe. Probably no real harm done that a good bit of elbow grease can't fix.

Well, guaranteed that it won't be as mean on your shoulder as the Savage 110 in 30.06. That butt pad should really soak up most of the perceived recoil.

These rifles aren't real tough on your shoulder. The action soaks up a lot of the recoil.
With lighter bullets (110-130 gr) it's a pleasure to shoot.
