I'm going to be aerosol duracoating my sks in the near future and was wondering how I should tackle the rear sight since its permanently attached to the barrel. I'll be spraying the entire receiver/barrel assembly. Can I just spray the rear sight too? Will it affect the gas tube lever, seizing it up with duracoat? Thanks for any info.

I'd remove the gas tube and plug it and the ports on the barrel. Then paint. The rear leaf comes out of the base so that can be removed before painting. I don't remember exactly how to remove it. I think you push it down/forward to disengage it. Googel it.

Cool I forgot I can take the sight leaf off. What about the gas tube lock lever? That's what I'm really worried about seizing up with paint.

The lever is actually very easy to remove and reinstall. Just use a hammer and punch to drive it out from left to right. The flared retaining portion is so thin it will simply straighten and let you remove the whole assembly. After you are finished just reinstall the lever and peen the end again.

I would suggest you start with a simple project and Learn about How to apply the types of finishes you want to use first.
Get an old 22 or even just plain scrap steel and practice your finishing and Masking procedures first before you attempt on the gun you are trying to dress up.
There is an Art to getting the spray finishes to look right, and they are too expensive and Durable to try and remove if you are not satisfied with your work.
They may Look like regular Spray paint, but there is a trick to applying them, and it mostly is in the Preperation , and Masking if you are only doing a Partial job like your sights.
TIP
All moving parts should be Removed from the gun and parts you dont want coated be carefully Masked off.
IE: the gas tube lever.

I'm not sure what your talking about tnxd I've never refinished before. Can you elaborate a little more for me thanks.

Yeah there is kg gun kote its got molybdenum in it. It doesn't really affect the thickness of parts thus can be sprayed on internals and this sight without affecting tolerances to much. They make two kinds. The bake on type which is the most durable is the 2400 series. The spray on and air dry type is the 1600 series.

Do a google search for kg gun kote. Its what the navy seals fire arms are coated with to prevent corrosion.

Duracoat is liable to add a thickness to the sight affecting the lever etc.
