A compilation among many states. Some require only contact ,some only if asked some Hybrids. Here is the latest update from August, 2023, to try to straighten it out:

I wil add a poll to see how THR feels about this issue. Its important to know the facts as we travel around the USA.

In synopsis it seems 10 states and DC require disclosing.

I understand the general principle, and don't have anything against it, but realistically, it's almost pointless. Very few illegally armed people are going to volunteer the information, and very few legally armed people are going to get removed from a car and frisked, so I don't quite see what the requirement accomplishes.

In Ohio it was required that the carrier of the gun immediately inform and officer that they were carrying concealed. Ohio recently passed costitutional carry and one of the conditions of this was the carrier was not required to tell law enforcement they were carrying unless asked. Much better.

It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned. Just follow the law and if you are asked simply answer the question honestly.
As far as Im concerned, its none of their business, so no, you shoudnt have to, nor do we have to in our state.
I understand both sides of this argument. We do not have to inform officers here in Missouri either. But I always do anyway. I have found that informing them right away that you are armed and have a valid CCW usually works in your favor and the officers won't be so jumpy/on edge.

As always, follow your state laws. And if informing the law is not required then do what you feel is best for you.

And really that's not a bad idea. Ohio has constitutional carry now but I renewed my CCW anyway.

It's the same here in Ohio. And really to me having proof of having the CCW training means something. It certainly was worth the time, trouble, and expense to get my CCW.

When the officer gets to my window, my wallet is on the dash, open palms on the wheel. If I need to reach for something, like my insurance card that is in my glove box, "Officer, I am licensed to carry, I am currently carrying. When I get my card from the glove box, you may see my spare mag. How do you want me to proceed?"

I always assumed everyone was armed, that way I'm not surprised if they were. CO has no requirement to notify, but I appreciated it when they did. Not that everyone with a carry permit is a good guy, but it's usually a good indicator. As always, ignorance is not a defense so it's good to have a working knowledge of the laws of the state you are in, especially when it comes to carrying. The handgun law site is an outstanding resource.

Maybe I am wrong but law enforcement where we live is on our side. Their attitude is that they need all the help they can get. Not that many sheriffs in our county.

The poll is clear enough, but I can't tell what you're asking in your post.

Myself being an american born and raised and being legal to carry and protected by the constitution i very rarely dont have a firearm on me somewhere. But when pulled over or any kind of encounter with leo one of first things i do is tell them im armed and where everything is located. With all the madness of todays world i think it does help to put there minds at ease a little and be upfront. And usually ends up with a good firearm conversation and has lead to some new customers when they start checkin out my leather carry gear. Asked or not asked what can it hurt to inform them your armed if your legal then no problems.

Don't ask don't tell is my feeling. Last time i got pulled over. I was in my car that has a keep calm carry on sticker on the back window. The officer did not ask if i was armed.

Any kind of firearms related stickers are just a sign for the criminals to break into your vehicle here in Missouri. This is especially true in the big cities like St Louis and Kansas City. Just something to think about.
