Does anybody know what the eaa witness elite match frame is made of? stainless? hard chrome? something else?

I thought it might be stainless, or at least hard chrome, but I pulled it out the other day and it has what looked like blackish rust forming at the top of the grip where web of your hand rides. This attached picture is what it looks like now after I cleaned it off with my fingernails, some solvent patches, and heavy oiling.

I found a reference to it being hard chromed alloy steel on another forum, but I don't know if that's true.

PS: don't mind the gunk in the screw holes. that's just dirt. The little black spots all over the backstrap at the mystery spots.

so did something just eat through the chrome? I just need to keep it oiled now? or can it be patched somehow?

Are those pits or just different color spots of some sort? I shoot and handle a lot of these now and have never seen one that appears to have black spots on the frame. Although if it was a shooter I'd have a hard time coming up with a reason to worry about it.

I think they are pits. They are very shallow though. The spots were bigger before I started working on them. What is left does not want to scrape off with mild implements.

It's a shooter for sure, but I don't want it to get any worse. If it had been stainless I was just going to polish them out with 600grit sandpaper.

So they were not there originally, then appeared, then you worked on them and got it to what it looks like now?

I will look closely at mine tonight and see if I can find anything like looks like that... is that really what it looks like in person, or is the lighting making it better/worse?

Well you can go here and see...

As there are several guns that fall under that name the frame material is either polymer, carbon steel or stainless steel.

The finish of the guns vary. For example "hard chrome" is a finish applied to carbon steel guns.

So take a look and figure out what you're talking about to get the most accurate answer.

correct. and that is a pretty true to life picture.

Tipoc, I started my search on eaa's site, but all I can find is the match being labled "2-tone finish"

I looked closely at about 4 different ones today including mine, and all show the same thing to one degree or another.

I'm sure you can take it off if it bothers you, but looks like it is going to be unavoidable to some degree if it is a shooter.
