Has anyone found an earmuff set with high NRR that you can wear while shooting a rifle? Can you get a good weld with the muffs in place? Thanks

I shoot rifles all the time with muffs on. Plugs and muffs are even better.

I'm glad this question was asked, as it continues to be a an irritating problem for me too. Plugs just don't seem to stay stuck in my ears when I shoot, but the cheek weld problem can't be ignored with muffs.

I have Silencio, Caldwell, and Peltor muffs and have not had any problems while shooting rifles or shotguns.

No problem with my Peltor ComTac IIs, as they are low profile. My Pro Ears are larger, and do interfere with a proper stock weld

I know what you're saying. I have cheap set of muffs, and they can definitely get in the way, expecially with certain styles of stocks(one of my rifles has a really high cheekpiece. Don't like to wear plugs in addition to the muffs.

But what I found were some Swiss Surplus hearing protectors, ARTILLERY models. 85 dB noise reduction! and they are very compact, fitting close to my head. Yeah they look stupid but work VERY well. I thik I have a couple extra sets (bought a bunch and sold some) if you're interested.

I require that our LEO's wear both plugs and muffs. The use of plugs alone is ok for some small caliber handguns and rifles, but when you get to the larger calibers, muffs are necessary. I have taken readings as high as 134db for large caliber and 116 db for 9mm. The tympanic bone behind the ear will pick up the pressure for the larger caliber and transmit the vibration to the inner ear. OK,, I'm through with the preaching cr#p. Sorry folks but I feel strongly about the topic.

I've used plugs or muffs (sometimes together, but only because of crummy muffs) for years. When I decided to spend the bucks on a nice pair of electronic muffs from Dillon Precision, I was converted. Now I'm an evangelist for electronic muffs. This particular pair gives plenty of noise reduction for any of the rifles or pistols I use, including the occasional .50 BMG (I've never come home with a "ring" in my ears--something that cannot be said for the days I used cheap, passive muffs). With the microphones you can hear a pin drop, or the breeze rustling the grass, etc. while wearing them, and in stereo, so you have some degree of directional perception. The profile is such that they only rarely (but sometimes) get in the way, and even then its a minor issue.

Given the choice I'll never use anything else.

There is only one thing I dislike about muffs: The're not practical with a wide brimmed hat, so I'm forced to use a baseball type cap.
