Ear Plugs: How the heck do folks shoot without em? History, etc.

I shot one round of .22LR a few months ago in the middle of the grasslands just to see how loud it was without plugs. It was still painful. No thanks.

oh god. you should try a .50 or 12 guage or my 47 WALKER. Wow those are loud. Would not recomend tryin.

I was born in the mid 50's.

Mentors & Elders included those that had served in Wars and not all were from the US.
Some were from other countries, that had fought in Wars, such as those from South Africa, or Israel.
Veterans of conflicts.

Add those that were in Active Duty, and those former and current in Law Enforcement.

Wax Ear Plugs, is one thing "we" used.
One can still find these in the Drug Store.
These are often still recommended for those that get "Swimmer's Ear" and yes they still work.

Cotton of course...and when "hard roll" cigarettes come to be, using the filter.

To clarify:
Roll your own cigarettes used papers and tobacco, no filter.
Soft roll cigarette is store bought (factory) with no filter. Today folks call them "non-filter".

Hard Roll referred to a store bought cigarette and when Filter cigarettes became more prevalent, and hard roll for where I was coming up, meant a store bought smoke with a filter.

Snag the filter, stick it in your ears, and smoke the darn smoke without a filter, and just shoot the durn gun.

I come up before all this Political Correctness, and with 3 Rules of gun safety.
Rule 3 was split, to make Rule 4 later on.

Now I was around Military Folks and C Rations were the thing. Oh boy were they!
I wish they still did these...I'd get these by the cases.

Now inside the box, was a "packet" with a 5 Pack of Smokes, book of matches, P-38 can opener and some other stuff.

I am a kid, being raised right with these Mentors & Elders.
Now I had my wax ear plugs...
I also had my 5 Packs of smokes, and just like Mentors & Elders, I'd snap off the filters and stick these in my ears to shoot.

I'd keep the cigarette without the filter too, as if I or someone got a bee sting, we wet the tobacco and put it on the bee sting.

Yeah I smoke, and yeah I still snap off a filter and stick filters in ears if needing a field expedient "ear plug" , and not just for guns, also lawnmowers, weed-whackers, leaf blowers, car races...etc.

How raised- what you do.

Steve

I used to be an avid bird hunter, and man we would burn up the shells. I always dreaded that first shot. It actually hurt.

But after that, when my ears were ringing uncontrollably, it didn't hurt so much. Little did I know the entire process would produce deafness if not corrected.

I corrected it but I'm amazed my hearing isn't much worse.
