I bought the lower some months back, but today I decided was the day to purchase the remaining bits to assemble My First AR.

The lower came from Anvil Arms, who were a pleasure to deal with; the design I sent for their free laser-engraving came out to my satisfaction, too. (I actually ordered a lower with parts kit and grip, so unless parts roll into a black hole, I should end up with an extra grip and parts kit ;))

The upper came from Del-Ton; this kit specifically:

I've added a few small upgrades: high-rider upper, chrome-lined barrel. Have read through various arguments about whether it's necessary or desirable; for $45, I decided I wanted it. If I change my mind, it'll apply toward the next one.

Del-Ton had a very nice ordering page -- I haven't compared it to tons of others offerering AR kits, but I liked it better than M&A's site, and better than many other (non-gun) commerce sites.

In the end, the parts are costing me a bit more than would have one (some varieties at least) of the CMMG bargain bin rifles, if I had been smarter and ordered when they were still available. But this way, the parts are all new, I have a penguin printed on the side of the gun, and hopefully I'll be able to assemble the bits without too much help. (Note: I am not mechanical-minded, so if I seek help it will be for the good reason that swearing at inanimate objects does me no good nor affects the objects.)

Election day (especially this one) seems as good a day as any to buy a gun, though since I also pondered some on the 31st, I'll call this Hallowe'en, Election Day, Guy Fawkes Day and Thanksgiving rolled together.

Great purchase, I'm looking at buying my 2nd AR-15, a DPMS 20" rifle. We need to keep these types of firearms in common use as Heller dictates.

stop by my thread and check out what the 5.56 is able to do to a car, and a 1/4 inch steel plate.
all tests done with my new DPMS Sportical.

What is your opinion on the sportical? I held one and it wasn't impressive - no forward assist and no dust cover. Seemed a bit cheap feeling - but you've shot one - you tell me.

Thanks!!

well, I dont have much to compare to, as its my first AR..
however, Im impressed and glad I bought it.
So far as my use with it, I dont need a foreward assist, or dust cover, my sister, ANG, and Brotherin law, Navy Spc Ops, have both told me those two features arent much concern accept fore sales pitches...

what I can tell ya is that the only faliure in about 600 rds, came from Wolf ammo, out of a 20rd box of .223 55gr FMJ, that had a single HP packed in it.. I was quite dissapointed to find that... QC eh..lol yeah...

but I dont find anything about this sportical cheap. Im not a gun snob either tho. I live in the woods, and my guns go thru more than the average folks who take trips to the "range"..
but then again, Im only about 600rds into her. so my opinion may change.. so far, Id buy it again!

dust cover and foreward assist are only sales pitches...

wow..

learn something new everyday

Aside: I'm poor at responding on this site (.org) because I don't really have time to check in frequently at both .org and .us. Haven't followed the legal fight closely, that's just how it is. But I appreciate the responses! If I remember to, I'll post an eventual followup-with-pics on both sites.

Just picked up my first AR-15 today in post-election protest. Just a base model A2 20" barrel.

I figure when I replace the barrel with 16", new flat top upper, collapsible stock, etc I'll have spare parts laying around to put on a lower receiver.

The forward assist is a remnant of the first AR's in use that were produced with chrome plated bores, but not chrome plated chambers. Gunk would build up in the chamber and a round wouldn't fully feed, thus a slap on the forward assist with the heel of your hand. When all the military AR's started coming out with chrome lined chambers, the need for forward assist pretty much went away.

When conducting Pre Combat checks in the Objective Rally Point its nice to be able to pull the charging handle back just enough to ensure a round is chambered then let it ride forward slowly (noise disipline and all) To actually close the chamber you use the foward assist.

Not all that practical for today but still for most military schools...i.e. Ranger/Sapper ect.
