I bought the lower some months back, but today I decided was the day to purchase the remaining bits to assemble My First AR.
The lower came from Anvil Arms, who were a pleasure to deal with; the design I sent for their free laser-engraving came out to my satisfaction, too. (I actually ordered a lower with parts kit and grip, so unless parts roll into a black hole, I should end up with an extra grip and parts kit )
The upper came from Del-Ton; this kit specifically:

I've added a few small upgrades: high-rider upper, chrome-lined barrel. Have read through various arguments about whether it's necessary or desirable; for $45, I decided I wanted it. If I change my mind, it'll apply toward the next one.
Del-Ton had a very nice ordering page -- I haven't compared it to tons of others offerering AR kits, but I liked it better than M&A's site, and better than many other (non-gun) commerce sites.
In the end, the parts are costing me a bit more than would have one (some varieties at least) of the CMMG bargain bin rifles, if I had been smarter and ordered when they were still available. But this way, the parts are all new, I have a penguin printed on the side of the gun, and hopefully I'll be able to assemble the bits without too much help. (Note: I am not mechanical-minded, so if I seek help it will be for the good reason that swearing at inanimate objects does me no good nor affects the objects.)
Election day (especially this one) seems as good a day as any to buy a gun, though since I also pondered some on the 31st, I'll call this Hallowe'en, Election Day, Guy Fawkes Day and Thanksgiving rolled together.
