Here is what I own. A pair of Howard Leight Impact Sports and a pair of Peltor (TacComm I believe). I picked the Howard's for $45 at Sportsmans Warehouse. They are decent. They have a 3.5mm headphone jack so you can plug your iPod or walkman (depending on age generation) into them. Not sure in their right mind would use that feature at the range. I used that feature on long trans-oceanic flights on C-17's where I wanted to listen to movies but keep aircraft noise out of my head. They are kind of stiff and thick. They hang a little low and mess with my cheek weld on the gun and do a decent job of contouring to my head, but I have a small mellon. Comfortable to wear for about 2 hours then they get irritating. They pick up low sounds very well, and lower the high sounds well. There is a slight processing delay from the time the mic picks up the sound, it is lowered then transmitted to the speakers, but you don't notice it until you look at someones lips when they are talking. Volume adjustment is good. I actually got more use out of them when I used to get off work late and wanted to play X-Box while the wife and kids were sleeping.
The Petlor's...well those were issued by the USAF. Best headset I have ever had. I am a CV-22 flight engineer and I use them ALL the time. I used them when I was on HH-60's, on the V-22, when I go shooting, working with power tools, etc etc etc. Yes, they are spendy. But if you have deep pockets they are so worth it. Extremely comfortable, form to my noggin very well wicked quick processing, positive feed back via "beep" tone when you turn them on and off, pick up low sounds and remove background noise like helicopter rotors pretty well. I can and have worn them for hooooours. Again, LOVE them. You couldn't get me to part with them for anything.
