I'm looking for recommendations on inexpensive electronic ear muffs. I have an older pair of Caldwells and they're great, but my wife's newer pair of Caldwells have a constant buzzing in them.

I'm looking to spend $30-50. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've had an incredibly good experience with my "Peltor 97044 Tactical 6S Active Volume Hearing Protector".

I know I spent under 50 but it may have been due to a sale. I don't think you're gonna do any better though in this general price range.

I did have an issue with them that was covered by the warranty. I received them back from 3M before the end of the next business week.

Edited to add: the link above is right at $50.00. That's where I purchased.

That is what I have and I am happy with them. They need to be used with earplugs for better protection. IMHO.

I don't even know what kind I have but I got them at Walmart for $25 and have been happy with them. I used them yesterday sighting in a 30-06, .243, 25-06 and a .223 and they worked flawlessly. It's always strange for the report to be so muffled and then hear the echo so clearly.

I will also add my recommendation for the Howard Leight Impact Sport. Here is my pair:

Nice shooting profile, easy to use roller switch (on/off and volume). Very comfortable to wear.

As I recall I paid less than $30 shipped for mine and so far they've been perfect!! Stereo... six microphones... very quiet but sensitive to direction... etc.

Have had 3 Peltors so far, but the Howard Leights do a good job.

I have the Howard Leights as well. I double them up with foam earplugs when I'm at the range, and I use them by themselves when hunting. They are easy to use, they are mostly comfortable, and they work fairly well. I use them because they don't get in the way while shooting a rifle. Battery life is 20-30 hours in my experience.

My bigger earmuffs work better and are more comfortable, but they don't allow for cheek weld. If you want a pair primarily for handguns or mowing the grass there are probably better options than the Howard Leights. I have an excellent pair of Winchester muffs that were $20 or so at Walmart, but they aren't electronic. They are my first choice when a rifle isn't involved in the day's activities.

I'd highly recommend MSA Sordin (I switched over from Peltors a couple of years ago) but I'm afraid they don't make anything in that price range. Supreme Pro is nothing short of fantastic, though.

I've got the expensive Peltors and I really like them. I would imagine their low cost versions are probably OK also.
