Elk Rifle Selection?

Good bullets:

Barnes Triple Shock (solid copper w/expansion cavity, had a buddy use these in Africa, swears by them.)
Swift a-frame
Nosler partition (though some claim the nose can 'wipe off'' I've never seen it)
Sierra Game King (I like these nice smooth bullet, no channelure to provide a weak point, some don't like the thinner jacket)

Whatever you choose, avoide plastic nosed wonder bullets, they tend to expand too fast.

All are good rifles

Use premium bullets in the mid to heavy weight range. Elk are a lot more than a large white tail or muley. That will be very apparent when you get one and have to drag it out.

Drag out an Elk? I've never seen that done before unless it's with a quad or some other motorized vehicle. Always had to quarter them in the field or get a vehicle or horse to them. Way too big of critters to be dragging.

"f you shoot that Win. Featherweight .30-06 well, that's what I'd take. And what was said about too-powerful 'scopes is correct. Any good 2x7, or fixed 6x or 4x, will be just fine. So will a 1 1/2x5. There's some mountain country here that has some very thick trees and brush.

So long as you know how to to shoot accurately, that '06 with 180 grains Nosler Partition bullets will down any elk on the North American continent."

Ditto!!:) and +1 on the Leupold VariX 3 1.75-6 AND the good binocs!;)

DITTO... I simply don't use anything else given a choice on any game. I'm not saying there not any other FANTASTIC game bullets out there. I've just had spectacular good performance form these bullets. they are also the most accurate, consistent bullet I've ever used in any of my rifles.

My elk rifle is Bigfoot Wallace, a custom '03 in .35 Brown-Whelen. My handloads drive a 225 grain Nosler Partition Jacket to an honest 2,800 fps.

Vern,

What does your shootin stick send 250's out the pipe at? The more I hear you talk about that rifle the more interested I am. It sounds like it's just about a non belted .358 Norma!

Also just sounds like cool factor off the scale. ;)
