Emergency ammo supply

It just depends on the gun and what it is used for, and how often. My "magic number" for hunting rifles that get low yearly round counts like my 243 and 6.5 CM is 4 or 5 boxes total on hand. I have 2 boxes of 30-40 for my Krag carbine, which I have no plans to hunt with again- I killed a deer with it in Nov. and checked that item off the bucket list. It turns out that "magic number" was a good idea, due to the recent craziness. I opened a box of ammo for each rifle I intended to use this year, and used between 3 and 6 rounds to verify the zeros per gun. Every round I fired after (3 total, from 3 different rifles) ended up with a deer down. So if I HAD to, I could continue hunting deer with just what I have on hand for the foreseeable future. For guns that I have for CCW, HD, etc.- which I train with often (or at least used to) the "ideal magic number" is going to be higher- but never high enough. Most of us got caught by surprise last year. I was taking advantage of the grace period for filing taxes, with the intention of spending my entire return, and matching the amount of my return dollar per dollar from savings- on tula 9mm in the summer of 2020. Turns out the world had other plans for us. Should have used my credit card in Jan 2020.

There's lots of people wishing they would have run up a credit card buying ammo in 2019. Of course there's people that did and they are now selling on Gun Broker.

I thought I had enough ammo stashed away but now I wish I would've used the plastic too. :uhoh:

I wouldn't expect to stash a whole bunch of .41MAG ammos, for example, but I have a reasonable stash of 5.56mm and 7.62mm, along with some others. Granted, I also load for everything I shoot, besides having factory ammo for some, so if it gets down to it, I CAN stash a bunch of .41MAG if I need to, etc.

I was in a similar situation, saving from several paychecks for a big ammo buy in April or May. When coved hit, I should have gritted my teeth and payed the slightly higher prices of early april. I decided to wait, thinking I would get another chance before the election. But more covid and riots made me a fool.

I have enough for a pseudo-apocalyptic emergency, and enough to shoot all I really want to for the next 4 to 5 years. But not enough for the next 10, 20 or the rest of my life -- which is the amount I will try for if I ever have the chance.

I have about 500/gun. 22, way more. Most of them I have 2000+ primers, 3-5#powder per caliber, and bunches of bullets and a pile of lead, moulds, dies, etc. My fear is running out of trap shooting supplies. Three leagues, two grandkids starting youth league, etc.

minimum of 1000/cartridge

Agreed, for the ones that are shot more than others.
If I approach that number and feel I am getting low, causes me to be anxious. Particularly 9mm and .44 Rem. Mag., the two I shoot the most. And now, 45 ACP.
22 LR is another story, as I have heard and learned here on THR, buy cheap, stock deep.......can shoot that a lot.

Rifle hunting ammo is okay, as I probably have more than enough for several life times.

Getting too old to worry about it any longer...... and if I pass tomorrow, my kids will have a blast! :)

Edit to add...........and Grandkids!

In an emergency, how much can one carry?

I know of guys who think 10,000 rounds of any caliber in the guns they have is too low of a supply, let alone twice or better of components to build more ammo.

I do not have the storage space for that...........and do not shoot as much as many here on THR!

Your Mileage May Vary.........:)

Some guns/calibers more than others, some none at all.

I got enough 40 S&W to fight my way through a second apocalypses after I get done kicking the first apocalypse's butt.

More realistically, I see more than a handfull of magazines worth is unlikely to be beneficial if the situation goes pear-shaped and two-way, whether that be a very localized or more general conflict. The idea of a protracted engagement that consumed hundreds of rounds of ammunition and leaving me reliant on only my own stockpile seems unrealistic, or at least long enough odds I don't let it worry me.

My larger stockpiles of particular calibers are because I use those. I have heaps of 40 S&W because that it what I am shoot in competition not because I am doing multiple apocalypse planning. :D

I am on a few dozens email lists in case ammo comes in, a few minutes ago I checked my "throw-away-email" and got the offer of my lifetime:
cheaper than dirt, 45 ACP, box of 250 for only $600, woweeehh

Therefore I am putting potential trespasser/burglars/blm/antifa and all the other riff ruff on notice, I will have to shoot you with 22LR, multiple times and you will suffer!!!

That is where a semiauto like the 10/22 or a Marlin 60 come in handy.

Reloaded - depending how many rounds to keep on hand also depends on the number of guns they need to "feed". With .22 LR, you should probably keep at least 500 rounds per gun. With a semiauto like an AR or AK, you might be wise to double that quantity. Any bolt action centerfire rifle should be OK with 300-500 rounds but centerfire handguns (calibers .380/9mm through .45 ACP) should probably have double that. Shotguns, esp. 12 ga., you should keep at least 100 rds. of (lead) shot sizes 7 1/2 - 9 (small birds and vermin), 200 rds. of sizes 4 and 6 (rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, & [maybe] quail), and 50 rds. each of #4 Buck, OO Buck, and slugs.

It's gone up over the years. I think a baseline of 1k rounds of primary defensive rifle and/or pistol is adequate. I think about several unlikely, however possible scenarios. We all do, most of us carry a gun when a very small portion of us will ever use them in an armed conflict or self defense scenario. Some people might think it's nutty, but being prepared just seems logical to me.

Ammo is a valuable commodity, I don't imagine that will ever change so if you have a surplus, there is a possibility of barter and trade for other necessities in a survival situation. Likely? I don't know. Possible? Yes.

As an aside from Hunting and defensive guns, I think it's also wise to have a multi purpose gun like a rimfire, and to stack it deep.

I used to be happy with a loaded magazine for every gun I owned. Everything else got shot up, I have been through a few administrations and panics since then. My thinking has evolved a bit on that....

Enough here to sustain decent security until things either change for the better or we need to fall back to our families re-assembly area in the country. One good thing, if SHTF ammo could be traded for gas and other essentials.

Lots of gloom and doom thinking on this thread; again, ammo supply will be the least of your worries if things transform. That kind of decay will not happen as in a movie or a video game - think slowly, sneaky and out of sight.

I got to laugh,
Sure I have a have 4 figure stock pile for each gun, each caliber.
Been buying cheap and stacking deep since the 90's, cause I practice, shoot recreationally, compete, teach, and enjoy shooting.
The laughing part is the guys, that have never been in firefight, that fantasize they are going to hold off the marauding hordes - by themselves - with a Kimber Micro - 2K rounds - and 3 mags.

I've used as a rule of thumb I like a 2+ year supply on hand. For my hunting rifles that might only be a couple boxes or 30-40 rounds. For my 9mm that is thousands. For 22 same. Since I reload all but .22 I need supplies for that 2+ year supply. I'm just now dangerously close to getting down to that 2 year supply, but this nonsense has been going on for about 10 months. So, as usual the answer is it depends. If you compete you will need even more.

For the casual guy that hunts once a year, and has a pistol for home protection he may need a box of each caliber and is good to go or feels he is.

I've always kept what I called an emergency supply of ammunition for every gun I own (500 rounds per gun). Those rounds never get shot, but I will rotate stock when ammo is cheap. I've been wondering if I should increase that number. How many loads do you keep in reserve per gun ?

Kinda depends on the emergency you think you will need it for, doesn't it? Zombies coming over the fence or 'hard to find ammo' emergency??
In an emergency, how much can one carry?

That's what my son does not only in ammo but also in number of guns.
that fantasize they are going to hold off the marauding hordes - by themselves

'Like'...:)
