I have recently been having a lot of problems with my Emerson Mini CQC-7. It hasn't gotten much use since I bought it a few months ago until this last week. The first problem is just cosmetic but whenever I use it, it gets big black scratches in the "satin" finish. Not a big deal but I like my knives and guns to look nice. Second is that occasionally when I use it, chips come out of the blade. I dropped it today (gloves caused me to lose my grip) and when it hit the ground, numerous chips came out of the front edge, effectivly dulling it. Also, two weeks ago when I opened it up, I noticed that the tip was gone, a chip had apparently come off flattening the tip. I am really dissapointed considering the cost of this knife. I think that I will spend half the cost of the Emerson to get a new Mini Griptillion for EDU. I like the Emerson and will get it resharpened but it just doesn't stand up like I need it to. My Buck has withstood much more use but it is still fine, dull but still in great shape other than a worn out spring. Anyone else have these problems with their Emersons? I have a theory and would like to know what some of the Gurus think. Could these problems be caused by the way Emerson uses a chisle ground edge? It makes it rediculously sharp but it is also very thin and possibly more fragile. In regards to my upcomming replacement, I am done with tanto blades for now so which style should I go with? I am thinking about getting the Spyderco style blade with a plain edge. What are the advantages of the different blade styles and combo vs plain edges?

ETA- I HATE LAPTOPS!!! I bumped the mouse pad while typing twice on the last line of the post and it highlited and erased the entire thing both times.

I haven't heard of things like that with Emersons but I'd call them and send it in. Sounds like bad heat treat on the blade.

I don't know that it is a bad heat treatment... Sounds about right to me. If you drop any knife that is sharp onto the rocks it is going to mess up the edge IF it hits edge first.

What is making the black marks on the blade? Is it the liner? How tight is the blade? Is it too lose?

I agree with you on the tanto point, its not for me either....

I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you dropped the knife and then knocked over the mouse. Exactly how many times has the knife hit the floor?

If the factory won't cut you any slack, PM me.

I agree!

Drop a sharp knife on rocks or concrete and bad things happen to the edge & point!

I also think that any black coating, on any blade, will rather quickly get scratched if you use the knife for cutting things.

The whole story sounds about right to me.

Just to clear something up, only about half of the chips are from me dropping it. The rest are from just every day use. I only dropped it once and it was on a dirt driveway. The tip was broken before the fall and I didn't use it to stab anything other then boxes.

I have already talked to The Tourist a little about some sharpening work but I am currently in Espanola, New Mexico for the next two days. When I get home, I had planned on contacting him further but that was all before most of the chips came about. After seeing his recent thread, I might have to buy a CRKT Razel for hard use and leave the Emerson for lesser duties once I get it fixed/sharpened. Tourist, expect a PM sometime soon.
