Enlarged flash holes

Well if the opportunity presents by his own free will, which it might, considering the circumstances, I'll certainly do what I can, I'm always willing to offer advice. I only hope he doesn't trash one or both of his very high end AR builds, or worse, before seeking some competent advice. But for the moment, stinking pride seems to be preventing that.

If my brass has a loose primer pocket or something is wrong with the flash hole I toss it. In 40 years of reloading I haven't found the need to modify any brass unless it's a change in the round, 5.56 to 300 BO for example. Maybe after he burns up and damages a few firing pins or bolt faces or get a face full of debris he change his thinking.
I fired a .308 once that blew-out the primer pocket because the pocket was out of spec. The AR upper filled up with smoke, burnt the tip off the firing pin and you could hear a distinctive difference in the sound and that was with a unmodified flash hole.
When the primer blows-out it's like a little rocket engine blowing up against the face of the bolt.

I simply don't understand why he isn't grasping the obvious. I mean, if I'm altering the size of the flash holes, and all of a sudden I start literally blowing every single primer, wouldn't the average person stop and think about the most recent change they've made to their process? I know I would. I wish you guys could see these bolt faces, they are a mess. And he's had to have replaced the firing pins a couple times already.

My Son said this fellow was going to be at the range today testing the federal primers, I'll bet that went real well.

Why, yes...yes, the average person would do exactly that!

But some people just aren't...average.

;)

He'll figure it out. He's just taking the long route to the answer.
