Even with Ike, you gotta love Texas

IIRC, Chinese Tallow trees are one of those which are considered an "invasive species" and not just because they invade your house in a high wind, lol.

In the first few evenings after Ike, we had community cookout on our driveway. one evening a constable drove through twice with his spot shining on, and between, each house. Someone commented that he must be looking for somebody...our neighborhood LEO just laughed and said, "probably just looking for a looter to shoot." We agreed that, given our neighborhood, he'd have to get at the end of a rather long line of folks who'd get him first ;-)

Let's see:

1) Power on Friday night. Check.
2) Internet and TV restored this morning. Check.
3) Which means no more thumb typing to keep up with THR threads. Check.

and best of all...

4) Roofer up there right this minute putting on my new roof! (Not that it appears that it's going to rain anytime this week, but still....)

Next...pulling out moldy wallboard (calling experts for this), and waiting for the insurance check, which I believe is wending its way through the innards of Allstate now.

It isn't normal. It isn't going to be normal for quite awhile, despite my wish to be able to click my heels three times and have everything like it was. But my house won't get wet inside when it rains, and experts will come and remove the moldy stuff in such a way that I will not be (hopefully) sickened by the multi color blooms on my walls.

My brother in law and Archerandshooter get back Saturday from Montana...it's going to be interesting, hosting a full-family dinner in what is now the functional office of Springmom's General Contracting Emporium....!

Upon returning to work today, found out that a fellow co-worker was drowned after returning from his evacuation. Story is that he encountered deep, fast moving water that swept across Hwy. 87 on the Bridge City side of the rainbow bridge. He called 911 when his vehicle began being moved by the currents. He was told to exit the vehicle and try to find something to hang onto until help could arrive. After the water receded several vehicles and bodies were recovered, along with his truck, but his body has yet to be found. Word is that his truck was more than 200 yds out in the marsh when found. Nothing has been said at work about taking up a collection for his wife, but should have something going tomorrow.
Hope that this will help serve as a grim reminder that things are not always what they seem.
Also hope that everyone here affected by Ike are OK.

So sorry to hear that. It's worth repeating to ourselves and our loved ones...it takes only a few inches of fast-moving water to float your car. In flash floods up in the Austin area, it happens every year. People think "oh, I'm in this big SUV [or whatever]...I'll be fine....".

Until they're not.
