Backstabber! And I critisized you in confidence
A
you're sooooo vain! isnt it possible there are other snobs out there that suggest the same thing?

besides, your criticism was more fueled by getting beaned in the head with my ejected empties, right? so when the range re-opens in a couple weeks, maybe you'll start leaving me the lane on your right.

though letting you catch the brass in your hair does make collecting it much easier. :neener:

"get a Glock, man. Those things can fire UNDER WATER!"

If I'm remembering The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly correctly (and I think I am), a simple old-fashioned SAA will fire underwater too (or at least from inside soap suds, which is just about as useful).

"When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk." :)

I carry a Springfield 1991 Gov't Model clone, which I had Novack's put new sites on, do a trigger job, polish the feed ramp, expand the ejection port and otherwise make more reliable, plus refinish it. (and all of which cost more than the gun itself). A couple of months ago I cracked my cheapo plastic grips, so I got rubber Hogues with finger grooves - boy do they make it easy to hold onto the gun and shoot well. I am able to shoot fairly accurately (at paper targets, anyway - I thankfully haven't had to shoot at any 2-legged creatures), and my ability improves with practice.

The only ones that know I carry are close family and close friends, several of whom carry themselves (them, and everyone on THR or Free Republic who's read my posts :scrutiny: ). Since I often carry in their homes (on the way home from somewhere else), I think it only polite to let them know. I have yet to have anyone refuse to let me in their home, or to run away shrieking, "GUUUUNNNN!!!," or anything like that. I had one person ask me not to bring the gun into the house with their children present, but I knew that she (the husband didn't care and, in fact, has since applied for and gotten his CHL) was a bit of a hoplophobe anyway.

I've faced 3 issues/challenges/complaints regarding my .45:

1) Why do you need to carry THAT!? OK, that's a hoplophobe issue, not an "I think your carry piece sucks" issue, but it probably has affected all of us at one time or another. These folks like to depend on the police, which for me has both moral and practical problems, but those are THEIR problems. My response is that the police can't be everywhere at once, and that policemen are mostly just armed and uniformed after-the-fact note takers when it comes to crime. I tell them to call Dominos and the police, and see who comes first (and even if its the police, it wouldn't be by much and certainly wouldn't be in time to prevent a crime, injury or death). I also let these folks know that in NO jurisdiction do the police have a duty to protect you (i.e. you can't successfully sue them even if the officer is watching the crime and refuses to help until he's done with his donuts and coffee :neener: -sorry, LEOs, I couldn't resist the imagery).

2) Why do you need/want a .45? This goes to stopping power and shot control. I always respond that if I have a need to shoot someone, I want them to stay down afterwards so that I'm either safe right away or I'm better able to deal with any accomplices. This doesn't necessarily mean "dead," though if that happens then I'll have accomplished the goal. As to shot control, I find that it has a different kind of recoil than my 9 - one that I'm able to handle better. I'm not a big guy with bear paws for hands, but nonetheless I can control it quite well. Of course, that's easier now that I am used to my gun and have put roughly 1,500 rounds through it. Heck, I took a petite 21-year-old to the range and she shot it decently (esp. for a beginner) without too many complaints about recoil (though she did comment on it having more kick than the .22LR fired out of my S&W 6-inch, full-lug revolver :D).

3) Why do you carry cocked and locked?/that old gun has no safeties, etc. This I attribute to ignorance, and I let people know that the gun was designed specifically to be carried that way. It won't go bang unless the safety is off and you pull the trigger - and I don't see much difference between that and other guns that I've got in this regard (of course, there's no mag disconnect on the .45 - a feature that I LIKE). I let people know that it is: a) impossible to fire my gun when it is in the holster, safety or no; and b) in all of the hundreds of times that I've carried, not once have I taken the gun out and found the safety moved from its locked position. This tends to calm people down. Of course, some of them say "but why one in the chamber - how long could it take to rack the gun?" To which I respond that I'd prefer to have as few disabilities in a gun fight as possible, and that the time needed to do this may be the difference between life and death. Further, what if your first notice of needing the gun is a guy grabbing/breaking/shooting your non-shooting arm? That'd make racking the slide a bit more difficult, no?

I've never had anyone make fun of the gun vs. some other gun (the old "mine's bigger than yours" child's game).

Usually, those that complain and/or make fun of what you carry are ignorant or snobby (or both, as snobbiness follows inevitably from ignorance). Immaturity sometimes enters into this. Simply letting someone know the facts, backed up with an offer to shoot your weapon if that's applicable at the time, will shut them up and show them that your choice wasn't so bad. If a different choice is better for them, then that's their business (even if that choice is to not carry and to be totally dependent on the goodwill of EVERYONE that they will ever meet).

what do I carry?

SA Nicro Comapct with 7 round Wilson Combat 47OX mag with Core Bon power Ball +P's and and extra, that should pretty much solve any problems and if it don't they will have to deal with an ornery old man and his dog.

yes it is

And it will run on most any ammo, is as accurate as my 5 inch SA loaded in combat situations and is a lot lighter. My American Express Gun , I never leave home without it. :p

As a matter of personal policy!!!

Only my closest family knows of my CCW choice. Other than that I will absolutely never discuss the matter with anybody at any time. I have been asked about my concealed carry status only once in 30 years by a LEO. Told him that I was carrying and that was that.

If you really want your concealed status to remain "concealed" my advice is to never discuss it. Good shooting;)

If I disagree with someone's choice I don't criticize them for it because that serves no useful purpose. I ask questions. Many times they'll have very good and valid reasons for their viewpoints and if they don't, well, then they get to start thinking about it and will criticize their decision themselves, which is much more productive for everyone concerned. :D

If you want to identify someone taking the low road in an arguement, here's an entertaining site : http://www.proft.org/tips/conv-terror.html

I think it should be required reading for all jurors. ;)

Thefumegator beat me to it, but the next time someone disses your .45 and advises you to get a 9mm throw this fact at them: The 1911 & .45ACP were adopted in 1911 (obviously). The 9x19 was adopted by the German army in 1908. Now, which one is more antique?

On the sidenote of Glocks underwater:

1. Make sure all the air is out of the barrel, or you will get a Kaboom!
2. Don't do it with a high-pressure round (like a Glock .40, which Tommy Lee Jones had... ) otherwise you'll get a Kaboom!
3. Don't put your head underwater (or be sure to wear hearing protection) or your ear drums will go KABOOM! Water transmits sound more efficently than air...

I was told along time ago about the 45. makes a big hole, lets alot of air in and lets even more blood out.

Yep, I carry a 5 shot 357 revolver. People tell me I don't have enough capacity. Well, that's OK because I am comfortable with what I carry.
I do, however, believe the 45 acp is one of the very best SD rounds available.

Jim

Yep. Some call a P32 a *&^%$ gun. My response is the typical one -- let me shoot you with it, you'll change your mind. Of course, no one has ever taken me up on it... (P.S., that's my "go-anywhere" gun; regularly, I carry a .40 or .45).

In some respects in doesn't really matter what you carry, just that you are.

I have a Beretta 9000 in .40 that I sometimes carry in the truck. Also a Beretta Mod 92 for vehicle carry, sometimes.

I have a Walther P99 that I carry in my briefcase at all times. 1 extra mag for each of them.

I have a Beretta Tomcat in .32 that I slip in my pocket when clothing or circumstances inhibit carrying a larger pistol.

My wife keeps an old S&W .22 LR wheel gun in the closet in the bedroom.

When I was in law enforcement I lost two good friends, leo's that were both killed with small caliber handguns. Both shot in the left shoulder area, one with a .22 and the other with a .25. Bullets fragmented and chopped up their hearts.
Any gun is better than no gun at all.

If I have to take on a bunch of armed thugs, I am going to go for a rifle with many 30-rounders as I can find, not some pistol!

Granted, I carry a 17 round wunder-nine too :) I think 9mm is the perfect balance between power and capacity.

However, rule 1 is HAVE A GUN.

Rule 2 is KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

Rule 8 or 9 or something is "make it shoot as many people in the room as you can" or some-such.

"Ever had your choice of CCW "dissed"by others? "

I quit listening to, or caring about, such comments. I probably don't make it seem as if I'm interested in hearing them, either.

Of course, I also quit offering my opinions to other people about their choices ... unless they asked me, and then I try to exercise some reasonable politeness. There's a difference between someone asking just for the sake of polite conversation at the range, and someone really wanting some advice. I remember someone once telling me why he felt a Beretta .22 SHORT was a great CCW pistol. His choice ...

I also generally don't disagree with a man who casually happens to mention that he thinks his girlfriend or wife is pretty, either ... and especially not while on the range. :uhoh: :neener:

Back when I sometimes carried a 4 5/8" SA Ruger .44 Magnum and a .45 Colt off duty, I used to get some gentle ribbing by a few other folks on our range. The teasing was gentle and good-natured, though ... especially when some folks watched me shoot them on the qualification course. They're a bit slower to reload, though.;)

Of course, things being the way they often are, SA revolvers were eventually disapproved for use as off duty weapons. Not "modern" enough.

I don't doubt that someone out there would say something to the tune of a 1911 and .45ACP being obsolete out of sheer ignorance , but I'd say that if I heard someone say that it would almost certainly be in jest or just to get someone riled up for whatever reason . If someone actually said that and meant it , you shouldn't pay it any bother but I really do have a hard time getting my head around someone who is knowledgable enough about CCW , handguns and calibers to know what SIG or Glock is chambered in what , what physical size they are , mag. capacity and so on would say something of the sort and actually mean it . There are lots of stupid people in this world though . Then again , I've met 1911 people who claim Glocks and Berettas are flat out junk and claim that they'd never fire one if you paid them and that seem to think a 9mm HP is somewhere between a spitball and a Nerf football in terms of how bad it would hurt to be hit by one ; I guess it takes all kinds of stupid :uhoh:

I carry a "marginal" .380 P230 most of the time . I don't think I've ever had it disrepected as much as questioned though strangely most people who tend to make comments about it tend to " have a .40/.45/.357/.44 Brand X at home " . I'm sure if push ever comes to shove , and I hope that it never in my lifetime will , I'll wish that I had a Rheinmetall M256 but they're supposedly a little difficult to carry IWB . It's my life , I should be able to protect it however I see fit and it's your prerogartive to do the same .

Some folks will ''diss'' anything - if it ain't what they specifically regard as ''correct''. :p

You carry (I hope) what is practicable, what you are happy and competant with and, what is convenient and manageable for extant circumstances. Beyond that - the heck with what anyone else thinks!!

I've been dissed plenty, but usually just in fun by my co-workers, of which almost ALL of them own and/or carry handguns. For those who have told me my gun is crap, I've given the same offer: Let me shoot you with it, then we'll see if you still feel that way! Otherwise, jokes aside, they know it can - and if need be, WILL - kill whomever would dare try to kill me. BTW, my gun is an EAA (European American Armory) Windicator .38 spl. revolver with 2" barrel.

1-Is it reliable;do it go bang when you pull the trigger? YEP! No worries about failure-to-feed/extract either.

2-Can you shoot it accurately? COM consistently at up to 15 yds. I think that's accurate enough for a 2" barreled gun.

3-Can & do you carry it comfortably? Whenever and wherever I can, without fail. Not always comfortably - sometimes the IWB holster tends to dig into the hip - but a gun doesn't necessarily need to be comfortable; it needs to be COMFORTING.

4-Do you really give a rat's behind what anyone else thinks? Not even for a New York second.

5-Who's butt are you trying to protect? Mine, my loved ones, and anyone else who's butt might be worth saving in a lethal encounter.

I always get grief, either from those who say, "CZ is cheap junk!", to the other who say "It's a what?" That's OK, the second half get to try it out, and usually end up wanting one or two themselves....
I get that a lot with the EAA too. I always hear that it's too heavy for a little 6-shot snub-nosed revolver. Then they realize after taking a shot with it that the extra weight REALLY helps cut down the felt recoil, and the rubber grips make it very comfortable to shoot for long time periods. That's enough to shut 'em up! :D

I remember seeing a security video where a shop owner, who's being robbed, grabs a .38 revolver out of a paper sack and shoots the 3 or 4 robbers who are armed with 9mm autos. He lived and I believe all of the others died. You could definitely tell on the video who won the fight hands down, even with the .38 wheelgun.
'Nuff said there! It's not the caliber or capacity. It's the proper shot placement that drops a BG and stops a threat!

The best gun for a person is the one they can carry comfortably and shoot accurately and reliably.

Another example ...

I've always preferred SA 1911-type .45's, as well TDA pistols. I don't particularly care for DAO pistols. Just me.

That means that while I've shot my fair share of Glocks since they first came out, that I just never was really inclined to own one.

However ... there's a lot of them out there, and some of the folks I train own and carry them, if not on company time, then on their own time.

Despite their more "ardent enthusiasts", Glocks can sometimes suffer from some of the same wear & tear, and parts breakage & failure as most other man-made things, especially handguns. I felt bad having to send some of our folks out to another L/E agency who either issued them or approved their use, and had a Glock armorer. I decided to become a Glock armorer.

Afterward, I picked up a couple of the smaller Glocks, and I've been doing a fair amount of shooting with them. They're still not as preferable to me as a 1911 or a nicely made TDA pistol, but they'll provide fine service for their intended use ... and who knows, but I may even be issued one in the future. It's just a handgun, anyway. They're an easy and simple weapon for an armorer to support and maintain, too. Gotta give them that, if nothing else.;)

I've put my armorer's class to good use, having had an increasing number of Glock owners come to me for some maintenance or repair of their pistols, and I've enjoyed helping them. I've also apparently influenced a few people to buy Glocks, usually after they handle and shoot one of mine ... and even another instructor, who had never really cared for them, bought one of his own after handling and shooting one of mine. I've had some gentle teasing by another one of the instructors, but it was good natured. He knows me, and he's seen what I can do with my little Glocks, as well as the 1911's that he prefers, and which I still like. Besides, who is he to talk? He just bought a USP .45 ... :p

Seriously, don't take things like this personally, and don't go out of your way to make some personal comment that might offend the owner of something else. Offering a personal opinion (informed or otherwise) is one thing, especially if it's solicited and welcome ... such as when someone in one of these forums asks for opinions & personal experiences ... but going out of our way in making some derogatory comment about another person's choice of firearm or caliber isn't something that's called for ...

The world around us can be rude enough without us adding to it.

I think everyone has had someone dis there carrying gun. Its typical. I made my poor friend feel bad when both my best friend and myself carried 2 pistols apiece and aveeraged 5 mags apeice. He had 1 357mag revolver.
(We did it just for ????s and giggles for two days just to see if we could conceal all that and did just fine)

I love the 357mag great round and how many revovlers have you ever seen broken in your life? Well Im 23 and have seen 0 and thats 1/4 of a very old persons life span, Im sure many of you far older and wiser have had the same experince.

Two things I would like to point out though. For the less skilled, less sure, shots out there a smaller caliber maybe a hell of a lot better. I know damn well Im going to double tap everything I shoot at if I can. If I carry 2 mags thats 33 rounds, which means 15 armed people after me. If I have gotten that far into the frier I am either carring a AK-47 with me or I deserve to be shot for making that many enimes. Most shooters under times of stress miss half there shots, or so the statistics say. If I miss 2/3 of my rounds I still have 10 hits. Tell me how many people are going to stand after more then 2-3 hydro shock 9mm's? Yes a 45 is bigger, but that doesnt mean a man with a 9 will do any worse then a man with a 45. Its all about where the shot goes, a 22 to the eyeball is more deadly then a 45 to the finger.

Second is reliablility. I know I am going to get pissed on for the next few comments, but remeber most people arent die hard gun nuts like the people on this forum. I have seen tons of 1911 and respect and like the style of the gun. However I have seen tons of guys down at the range have theirs Jam missfeed etc. Hell I have seen quite a bit of Glocks do the same thing, as compared to what all the glock owners protest is a issue free weapon. Two things probably cause this a 1911 knock off from a less then perfect company. I have yet to see a kimber 1911 jam but then again I dont see many. Also quanity of gun owners that dont take care of their firearms, which I believe is why I have seen the glocks jam etc.

Its like the AR-15s I havent seen a lot of jams on the range, but are Air Force, and Army(shot with some in ROTC and have friends in the Army that atest to this) jam all the freaking time. The AF I blame on poor maintnace. The army infantry take care of there rifles to well, and they still jam. Now I can count one finger the amount if times I have seen an AK jam, here and in Iraq.

Tieing my young and ignorent rambling together here.... Accuracy is damned important, concealing it on a body is pretty important, but capacity can spell the differnce between sucess and failure in stress, and with less then perfect shooters. However I think above all reliability and understanding of the weapon should be top priority.

On a side note I carry a walther p99 (never jammed) and just aquired a free p89 that i clean all the time that has never jammed. If you take care of everything it "should" work fine. Its weather you do or not.
