The wife is looking at getting a hunting rifle to accompany me in the deer woods this coming season. The Savage package rifle at Wal-Mart fits the bill, probably in .243. Thing is, I had feeding issues with a Model 10 I bought at Wal-Mart a while back. This new gun has the new and improved center feed magazine, but I would feel better if some of the folks here could give me some feed back about the new magazines used with short-action cartridges.

Of course, we could just go with a Savage package gun in .270, start her on reduced recoil loads, and avoid the whole short-action business . . .

I think your second choice would be better.

The 270 with the reduced recoil loads would fit the bill for her...and later when she is comfortable go with the high octane stuff. :)

Mine feeds excellent, btw...no issues...

Are you talking about a 110 with detatchable magazine?

I have a 10FP, essentially the same short action as the 110, but has a fixed floor plate (no detatchable magazine). Holds 4 rounds of .308, it feeds fine, occasionally if I'm working the bolt really slowly, and have 4 rounds in the mag, the first round will pop up and can sometimes bind, never had an issue when I was giving it all it was worth...

.270

I must confess that the only reason I mention the .270 is that I've been reading some Jack O'Connor lately. My Ruger 6.5x55 covers much the same ground. The Accu-Trigger is really nice, though.

And the model I'm talking about has a blind magazine.

The new model feeds 100% and is a great improvement. The older design needed the feed lips to be tweaked if you were experiencing problems. I plan to convert a couple of my older models to the new blind magazine style.
