Do you ever have extra odd shaped holes in your paper target when shooting plated bullets.
I have used plated many times---I finally had this problem on a 200 gr
45 acp x-treme bullet
just asking
I run them around 800fps with a light taper crimp

I had that happens once with a fmj 115gr 9mm but on a brand new target. The only thing I could think of is that someone shot my target at almost the same time. With plated bullets you could have loaded it to high and had the plating come off.

Please describe exactly what you're seeing or show pictures. Is it possible your bullets are tumbling?
I tossed the target.
It was not tumbling--it had a std. bullet hole with a bunch of holes around it that looked like it was hit by small shrapnel.
That was 50 rds---I will load up some more & see what happens

Yeah my guess is that some of the plating sheared off.

Doesn't sound like you're running them super hot; may have been some fouling in the barrel that effected it or the bullet may have been out of spec.

There are guys on here who are more knowledgeable than me though who may have a better idea.

I have seen this when shooting with rocks or loose gravel behind the target, from loose material being thrown back, is that possibly what you have going on?

I took one apart
small primer
7 gr power pistol
& the problem:I can see a taper mark on the bullet
that is why they came apart.
I think I will go back to HAP

Too much crimp will cut the thin plating, which isn't bonded to the bullet core. It produces the kind of shrapnel you describe when the plating strips off the bullet.

Check and see what diameter those bullets are, too. I know Extreme has produced bullets that were slightly undersized in the past. Just something else to watch for.

Hope this helps.

Fred

"...plating sheared off..." Not likely. Plating is usually only around 8 thou thick. Any extra hole would be extremely small. Not likely to have enough weigh to carry it far either. Plating isn't like a jacket.
Depending on the distance and the range backstop(assuming an indoor range) it's possible for bits of bullet to come back. Bits of 'backstop', like mjsdwash says, too.

Shooting at 30' on a 75' indoor range
I don't think the pieces came back

I have used inertial impact bullet pullers. Is that what you're talking about? And what about the ring? Is that from the seating stem? What seating die are you using?

I know the problem & I load many types of bullets for many calibers---- I will try to change the setting for different bullets & be more careful in the future.
I have 10,000 reloads sitting on the shelf right now.
So-give me a break--OK

I apologize if something I said was offensive. I don't know what I've said that wouldn't be consistent with "giv[ing] you a break," but any offense was inadvertent.

I'm just trying to help diagnose the cause of whatever spalling or other phenomenon caused the target holes you're discussing. But if you're not looking for help, I'll shut my trap.
