What is the proper method in removing an exractor from a Colt NRM 1991. Thanks.

Series 80 Extractor

Howdy Ruger,

There's a sequence for Series 80 slide disassembly.

Hold the slide in your left hand and depress the plunger with your left thumb and hold it in while pushing in on the firing pin with a tool. Hold the firing pin in and release the plunger. The firing pin will be captive in the forward position, and the firing pin stop should slide out.

Hold your thumb over the firing pin and depress the plunger again. The firing pin will release. Keep the plunger depressed and pull the firing pin and spring out as a unit. (The spring goes on the pin one way only.
it should press on. If you remove the spring from the firing pin, grasp it near the back of the opin and twist while pulling the spring.)

Put your thumb over the plunger to keep from losing it and lever the extractor backward slowly until the plunger releases. It may pop out, so watch the little spring under it. If the spring gets away from you, good luck finding it. It's lively and will bounce for a while. The plunger may require removal with needle-nosed pliers if it's dirty. Again...watch our for the spring.

Once the plunger is out, the extractor can be pulled out.

When reassembling it, the extractor must be out slightly from the installed position in order to get the plunger and spring back in. If you look into the plunger hole and lever the extractor backward a little, you can see when the cut-out in the extractor will allow installation of the plunger. When the plunger seats, push the extractor all the way in to capture the plunger. Use the firing pin stop to align the extractor with the slot.

Stand the slide on its front end, and depress the plunger while installing the firing pin and spring as a unit. Push the firing pin in with the tool until it stops and release the plunger to capture the firing pin. Replace the firing pin stop, and push in on the plunger again to release the firing pin. It'll pop into place.

Luck!

On some I've seen, the extractor tip will not "come by" the edge of the extractor hole in the breech face because the tip catches on the edge. If you just pry the extractor straight back, it will tear up the corners of the hook tip and also the breech face around the hole. I generally make a prying tool out of a popsicle stick and use it to force the tip over away (toward the outer edge of the slide) as I pry the slot of the extractor gently to slide it out. That way, I know I am not dragging the edges of the extractor tip on the breech face edge.

As I recall, it's the 9mm and .38 Super extractors that hang up because their hook tip sticks out farther than the .40/.45 extractor.

Sometimes

Bountyhunter is spot on with his post. I rarely see that in .45s,
unless there's something out of spec or somebody has reduced the forward pad too much...but it will show up in 9s and .38 Supers.

Thanks and a big KUDOS to ya BH!
