For 20 rounds at 600 yards, what would be a respectable score shooting in F-Class? I think I've seen scores posted by the top shooters of something like 200-19x or even 20x... but how about for a new person?

I started out shooting in the high 180s but I had the benefit of a Long Range Master as a coach and advisor. I have seen less well connected beginners not even get on the paper, especially at 1000. You need an accurate rifle/scope/ammo outfit and you must be able to zero at 600 yards. That is only about 14 MOA "comeup" from 100 yards for a .308, but some scopes may not have that much adjustment left after getting on target at 100. Check it out, be sure you can make your rifle hit high enough at 100 to be on at 600.

But things have changed, F-class is getting recognition and standardization. One thing they are doing is going to smaller targets because of the advantage of a scope and bipod leading to many cleans with high X counts.

The last time I shot at 600 yards they had a paste-on 3" X ring and the regular 600 yard rings counted one point less than printed; X ring = 10 points, 10 ring = 9 points, etc. A best score for the day of 192. (I am a casual occasional recreational rifle shooter, the good shots were in the high 190s.)

The last time I shot at 1000 yards, they were using the 600 yard target center and my scores were in the 170s. Again the serious shooters were way up in the 190s in spite of the smaller targets.

New targets are being drawn specifically for F-class and they will have one MOA ten rings and half MOA X rings for the different ranges.

mpthole,

I regularly shoot F Class at 1,000 yards, and have found the most new shooters, assuming they have a decent rifle/load, can shoot in the 180's with a little help from someone with experience. Shooting in the 190's is not really all that difficult once you have some experience under your belt. However, the new targets that Jim Watson mentioned will have a definate impact on scores. Good luck in F Class -- most fun you'll have outside of bed.
