Nate, I've seen them as low as $350 for the Universals and as high as $1000 for the collectables. I've heard bad things about the Universals breaking, but you should still be able to get a non-Universal shooter for $500-$600 at some of the gun shows. Forget about getting makers like IBM or Rockola for that price though.
I got my 1943 Quality Hardware for $300 oFf an old guy who just wanted to "get rid of some old guns he had laying around". I later bought his matching part Springfield Garand for $300, too.
I almost felt bad for taking them, but then I came to my senses!
Most will advise you to stay away from Universal. Isreali are fine, and run about $400-450. GI are extremely variable. If you get an import GI mixmaster, you should be able to find one in decent condition for under $400. They go up from there.
If you look around in newspapers and don't have to have one tomorrow, you can get a nice USGI for $350-$400. I got an Inland with 300 rounds 5 mags and bayonet for $425 in Jan. Got it out of the Newspaper. Don't pay as much if it has an import stamp. Most likely it will shoot just as well and there is nothing wrong with it but they sell for less.
