There seem to have been a number of picture threads started recently, an M-14 in action picture thread, an AK picture thread, an SKS picture thread, but strangely no FAL picture thread to support my newfound obsession with FALs, so hopefully this thread will be as popular as some of the others, 'cause I like looking at pictures, and I like FALs

Here's mine:

sorry, I've only ever taken two pictures of it, and the other one turned out a lot worse than this one

its a beaut! mumbles. There may even come a day when I might have one of my own to share in the thread:)

I put my order in for a Sig 556, but the other rifle I had in mind was a DSA SA58TAC, and if you guys keep posting these pics I am going to have to cancel my order :fire:

Nothing fancy, just a Springfield Armory Sporter with an aftermarket KDF muzzlebrake. Well made, reliable and accurate (especially with 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tips). It's all I want in an FAL.

The dino offered no challenge, dropped like an old fly

Not mine, just one I handled with much envy. It is a South African Police rifle. I am not sure of the exact designation (R1, R2 or R3) and I'm not sure if it is semi-auto only. But the same guys fired one of these in full auto on a rifle course. I didn't get to fire that, only the R5, which is a Galil variant.

FWIW, my 16.25" carbine averaged 2,540 feet per second at the muzzle when I chronographed five shots the other day. Ammo was South African Ball.

I believe the SA ball is underpowered, in addition to being inconsistent. When I started using SA ball (from Port), I had to increase the gas setting in order to get it to function reliably.

Of course, now that I've got the new barrel, my carbine won't function at all. Gas port needs drilling out, it seems. :cuss:

Going to buy some good ammo and see what it can do accuracy-wise. I'll be happy if it's 2 MOA with decent ammo. SA ball is just for plinking.

Odd Job

Nice guns!
How much altogether did that first one cost (including new barrel)?
umm, that's not YOU is it, my dear, darling wife?????
or just someone trying to make me cry??? LOL

i try not to do these kinds of calculations, but.......
IIRC the SA58 STD years ago was about $1400
added the freefloat at about $80
added the DSA HD mount (w/catcher) at $80
added the Loopy M8 6X42 A/O Mildot IIRC $420
added the Loopy QRWs & flipups at about $70
added the Harris bipod at about $50
added the Birdman Butt & PG at $225
some trigger work at $30
added the modded Rem700 BBL at $220

a few other parts were changed out like the Izzy mag release, L1A1 rear sight, etc but i also was able to pilfer out some US parts for other builds so that's pretty close. YIKES!
had i known before i bought the SA58 (my first FAL) how easy, educational, fun & (at that time) economical building these was, i would've gone another way.
and actually these #s are now moot since i swapped all those parts onto a Century receiver i picked up recently, but still, you get the idea!

if you didn't already know, be sure to use a dowel or cleaning rod section inside the bore to protect it before you start drilling out the port. FWIW my 16.5" carbine runs great at the midpoint of the range of gas adjustment with the port opened to 0.109" (7/64).

I'm not going to do the drilling. A gunsmith is going to do it. I'm not going to risk mucking up my $350 barrel trying to play do-it-yourself. You're talking to a guy that fixed a broken CD player by running it over with a Ford F-150. I'm not the delicate type. :D

Thing about FALs is they're all a little different. Your carbine runs with the short gas port, mine doesn't run at all. Actually, it does. With gas set on 1.5, it'll run about four mags, then it ceases functioning. I emailed Arizona Response Systems, and asked on the FAL files. Best guess is a too-small gas port. I'm hoping that's all it is.

$2500 +- ......

Not bad, I would pay that for a nice FAL like that (don't worry I won't tell the wife) ;)

I know this may be a hard question to answer, I am considering a FAL, but the only rifle I have ever fired was a .22lr.

Basically I am asking what is the recoil like?

How would it feel in comparison to lets say 12ga 2 3/4" 00 Buckshot federal reduced recoil I shoot out of my 870 with a 18 1/2" barrel? As that is the only long gun I have fired

Any help would be great

It's nothing like a shotgun. Especially in a full length rifle with some weight on it.

On a shorty carbine like mine, if you don't have a good cheek weld, it'll give you kisses on the cheek a little bit, but it's not going to beat you up.

Hanzo581-

A 16.25" barrel on a Fal will let out a mighty loud bang when you shoot it because of the barrel being so short that the gun powder doesn't combust to the optimum level like it would with a 21" barrel, so more of the explosion happens outside of the muzzle. Still though, you get pretty good velocity, and the recoil isn't bad at all. You can even soften the recoil by winding down the gas system. I have a 16.25" barrel on my Fal, and I love it. Its bar none my favorite gun.
