I am trying to choose between these three rifles. Its purpose is for range shooting and hunting. I would like any info yall can give me on the 1. accuracy 2. maintenance needed (how much care does the gun require) 3. ease of use (is it easy to operate and handle i.e. how easy is it to put lead on target) of each of the three types of rifle. Pls compare and contrast the rifles if you have experience with multiple types of the gun im looking at.

For range/"large varmint" shooting, .308 AR all the way.

For a bet-your-arse-on battle rifle that can be used, abused, and fed everything but south african tar sealed ammo (it plugs the chamber flutes), CETME or PTR-91 is your prescription.:D

A DSA or Entreprise FAL falls somewhere in between the .308 AR and CETME or PTR-91.

I own a CETME and I love it.:uhoh:

I would reverse two of Cap'n Jack's three. AR-10 for precision, FAL for abuseability and durability, and CETME/PTR-91/G3 somewhere in between.

A quality build of any of the three will do just fine, with the accuracy edge going to the AR design.

Just beware of the PTR-91. Many people, (myself included) have found it to be very picky about what ammo it will cycle properly with. Some are definitely worse than others but mine won't even cycle the PRVI M80 that I know is a quality round.

PTR91 Inc just blames the ammo. I can shoot federal 150gr with it but I want to be able to rely on this rifle, not have to check the headstamp of the ammo before I have any idea if it will work properly or not.

For what you're describing, I would vote for the AR-10. Accuracy is one of it's biggest strong points. If you want a battlefield type rifle that you can rely on 100%, that would be the FAL.

The problem I have with AR-10s is that there isn't a standard. Each manufacturer has different standards, uses different parts, and will take different magazines. Of course, if the place that made your AR-10 goes belly up, you are out of luck as far as parts goes.

The PTR and FAL copies don't suffer from this as those rifles (or the military rifles they are copies of) were made by the millions.

FAL - there's a reason it's called the 'free world's right arm'. However...

While you can scope a FAL, it's probably easier to scope an AR-10 or x91 variant.

You can scope a FAL pretty well with the DSA mount, but yes, the AR wins in the scopeability arena- you just can't beat the flat top. It's generally the more accurate design, too.

I'd go the AR-10 variant if your purposes are punching paper and hunting. I have two; DPMS 308 SASS and DPMS 308 AP4. I've used both for hunting and generally use the AP4 as it's quite a bit lighter. The SASS can be picky with ammo as it has a pretty tight fit. AP4 so far has digested everything no problem at all.

Granted even the AP4 is probably nowhere near as reliable as the FAL or PTR-91, but then again, both of them shoot better than MOA (AP4 just barely).

+1 Redlion

My PTR91 is picky as well. It eats everything, but it doesn't like GGG (Lithuanian). It cycles the GGG flawlessly, but it doesn't fire it accurately. It likes everything else I have fed it to include PRIVI M80, Silver Bear, South African, etc etc.

"...FAL vs PTR-91..." Heavy beasts to lug around hunting. Very long dollars for the AR10 copies. Still not exactly light either. Wouldn't put a scope on any battle rifle myself. Even the current crop of copies. They weren't intended to have 'em. Mind you, I'm used to real, semi'd, battle rifles, not commercial copies.
What's your budget?
"...how much care does the gun require..." All firearms require maintenance. It's not an issue.

"...Eventually I will have..." Healthy attitude. Just don't buy any rifle Century had anything to do with. They have no concept of what QC means. Nearly all Cetme's in the U.S. come from Century.

I got the PTR 91 didn't have any problems the only thing is it's heavy if you're going to be carrying it all day
