So because it is often discussed as a solution for fire forming, and correcting excessive headspace. I'm in the second group currently. Are there general guidelines on how much bigger the expander should be than the actual caliber. Just as an example if I'm needing a false shoulder in 6.5, should I be using a 7mm or 30 caliber. Does the ratio or size differential the same for all or does it change.

Yup, size the neck one size up but can be more say 7mm in your example if you don't have the next size. Then size the case like normal but leave the die up a few turns and try it in the gun, keep working down where the bolt will just close with a little effort.
I have some good fire formed brass that is .068 on the comparator and pushed back to .066 for bump. I have other brass that compares at .055. That's kinda asking for trouble and I learned my lesson with 7.7. I don't have anything between 6.5 and 30 so I was looking for optimum so if I buy I'm not spending in vein.
