fastest gun?

I was just wondering what the fastest firing firearms are, small arms through vulcan style cannons. If you make a claim, please include a web URL or other proof. Also, I am aware of the electronic/magnetic firearms, not very interested in them because they are still only prototypes (a nice youtube video if your not sure what they are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xe-QP8s1ZJc )

I thought that some anti-missle and anti-aircraft guns had RPM rates upwards of 20,000. I'm also remember hearing of some testing of some kind of electric gun that could fire as much as 80,000....

That Russian gatling in post 2 is the fastest I've ever heard of. Next fastest would be US electric gatling/miniguns at 6,000rpm max.

Gatling systems aside, I think the American-180 submachine gun was the fastest at 1500 rounds per minute

The GS cannons are for shooting down aircraft. The higher the ROF the better in that application.

TRW was/is working on multi-barrel cannons that operated differently than regular gatling guns.

I'm not sure if this is the same gun; some years ago they had a model where two out of six barrels fire at once, as opposed to one for a typical multi-barrel cannon. Tens of thousands of RPM IIRC.

gee, I wouldnt thought that the Navy's Phalanx CIWS would have been at least a close contender, seeing as how it is intended to (and easily can) shoot down missiles/rockets headed for the ship, but itlooks like its ROF is only ~4500 rounds per minute (still pretty fast IMHO),but it looks like ther is plenty of stuff faster.Learn something every day....

There's the M231, FPW. 1100 - 1200 rpm from an M16 platform rifle. Actually in service I believe.
