Hi!

I stumbled onto something by accident.

Bought a Yugoslavian M59/66 SKS rifle recently. What is supposed to be a 10-round fixed magazine actually accepts 11 rounds. The magazine is original, with a serial number matching that on the receiver, stock, and trigger assembly. The rifle looks hardly used at all. It was all covered in cosmoline, has no wear on the receiver or the inside the magazine.

But the mag accepts 11 rounds and even has some spare room... I have tested this again and again.

Has anyone dealt with this problem before? Is there is a quick and easy fix?
I made sure the magazine sits in its place correctly. The rifle fires admirably. I just feel uneasy about having this questionable magazine...

Please help.

Nope, not faulty. A lot of fixed SKS mags will accept 11 rounds. Not too sure how well they feed when topped off like that, but it's nice to know that Simonov gave those mags a little extra breathing space.

So... this is a FEATURE then - not a defect?

What I don't understand is this: the Yugo SKS is supposed to be nominally 10 round and legal in CA, and I bought it from a federally licensed dealer that's been in the business for decades... The Yugo SKS is also on the BATFE C&R list.

Is my SKS still legal with this original unmodified magazine?

Or do I worry too much about nothing?

OP, your problem is caused by a slightly bent follower which is a common occurrence with SKS's. It's not really a problem unless it quits feeding reliably...or you live in CA.

I have seen other sks rifles like that. I can't see why you would get hassled for that since they were sold like that with 10 round nondetachable mags. I had a russian makarov that was the same way. Both the 380acp and the 9x18 guns used the exact same 10 round mags. The problem was you could get 11 rounds of 380 into the mag. You couldn't get the mag in the gun with the slide forward but with the slide back you could get the mag in and the gun would work. Mark

Look, it's a 10 round fixed magazine - the rifle works

Please leave it alone and enjoy shooting it. There are NO aftermarked mags for the SKS that work as well as the 10 round factory mag.

Just shoot it, forget about the "11th round".

Thank you to all who responded!

Very much appreciate your feedback! I certainly feel a lot better about the situation.

My Yugo SKS (pre- gas tube switch) is the same. Loads, chambers, shoots and ejects like a dream. My only complaint is I can't find any 11-round stripper clips! ;)

It's a common "problem". If it feeds, then don't worry about it. Also check your local laws, it may be illegal in states with a high cap magazine ban.
