Fav non-standard cartridge

My new Savage 338 Federal is the most non-standard that I own today. Don't know if Wally World carries them. The 7mm TCU that I had in a Contender was roll-your-own only. It was a fun gun but I would go with 7-30 Waters if I had to do it over. It is less picky about headspace.

22HP is ridiculously hard to find projectiles for, due to the oversized .228 bullet diameter. There are a couple companies that make them, but they aren't even offered by midway or brownells anymore. You've pretty much got to order direct. Norma makes brass.

It's a neat cartridge though! Such a unique shape to it. And yeah, it's a screamer. Mine get shot out of a savage 1899

Yes the bullet thing takes me back, and really the only thing holding me back....but as I get farther and farther "into the weeds" I am learning more and more ways "around" things.

I just like the old and odd stuff, I am not sure what the draw is to them....perhaps it is just to be different.

I am really thinking at the next high power game I am going to show up with a trap door.....everyone shows up with a garand or AR....where is the fun in that.

Wow, you guys have posted some interesting rifles and cartridges. I guess for me it would be;

308 Norma Magnum
7.7 Jap
22 Hornet
222 Remington
22-250 AI
357 Herrett
44-40

Nothing really far out but usually not easily found.

The .22PPC(USA) had a splashy beginning about 30-35 years ago and offered in some impressive rifles, like this pretty Sako Vixen. But it's now another almost forgotten cartridge, so I haven't even bothered to mount a scope.. DSC_0414.JPG DSC_0396.JPG .

.22 HORNET , 221 FIREBALL , .22 SAV H.P. , 25-20 , 250-3000, .257 ROBTS , 6.5X55 , 6.5-06 ACKLEY , 280 REM , 280 ACKLEY , .351 WIN. .404 JEFFERY. To early to call on a 6 Creedmoor.
22 SAV H.P. Isn't Hard to find ammo for , S&B , and PPU load it . They call it 5.6 X 52R in Europe . Cost about the same as 30-30 . Just saw J&G Sales has it for $18.99 a box. I believe they call 25-35 5.7X57R.

6.5x55 is the favorite , kicks like a 243 , hits like a 270

Mine would be my 222 and 32-40. I haven’t seen 222 in my LGS in quite a while and I have never seen 32-40 in any gun store.

I guess a 1944 Husqvarna M38 6.5x55 would be it for me. I sold a K98 8x57 a long time ago. Worst rifle I ever owned. I do like the Swede, especially since I put a mojo rear sight on it. I know this thread is about cartridges, but I just can't help myself.

I have found loaded ammo for it, but I am looking for bullets....and with PPU I wonder if it is like their 6.5 carcano loads that shoot for garbage out of several of my rifles, but my own loads using hornady bullets, the only ones I know of with the bottle nose (carcano never had a spitzer that I know of) and is a little fatter, those will bring groups down from minute of basket ball to minute of softball and I am good with that.

I want to find someone that makes the right sized bullet before I start down the path of resizing something else.

What size bullet does ppu load with....I have seen cutting edge make a 228 solid and will likely give that a shot when I come across the right 99 in 22HP.

The 9.3x62 Mauser is to African sportsmen and farmers what the .30/30 is in the US. Meaning there is, or was, one in about every gun rack. But here in the US it remains another exotic and mostly unknown metric. I bought this Mannlicher, and ammo for it, a few years back when hunting in Austria. and shot several head of game with it. Performance is virtually identical to.338 Win Mag with 250 gr bullets. DSC_0423.JPG DSC_0435.JPG DSC_0438.JPG

What brand is that rifle? It's Gorgeous!

Would love to hear more about that .338 Fed. I'm intrigued by that caliber for some odd reason.

I don't have any experience with the ppu , but i bought several boxes of the s&b a few years back, i've shot a deer at about 200 yards with it , worked great - silver dollar size exit , only went about 30 feet , hardly any bloodshot . S&B shows s.p & f.m.j. 70 grain .227 component bullets on their website , but i have know idea who carry's them. i have a couple boxes of hornady bullets , but i haven't reloaded for it yet. I use it kind of sparingly. you might try some european companies , supposed to be popular over there for smaller deer.

I've never seen a 44-40 win or a 38-55win there or most other ammo shops.
45-70 and 50bmg, at one time they carried both but not anymore, I found a few boxes a couple of months back and when I purchased this one I got 18 boxes of ammo 20181107_093134.jpg .
Also I've never seen 6.5 arisaka or 8mm Mauser

It is a 308 necked up to 338. Federal Fusions states 2700 fps with 200gr, but all of my loading manuals say 2500-2600. Haven't had the weather to sight-in and chrono any loads yet. Found 200gr. Speers for $14 a box at Grafs and Sons. Bargain!

Thought I'd responded to this thread, guess not.

30-40 Krag like others
358 Win - not impossible to find, but easier when you have 100 unfired cases to work with
256 Newton in a Newton 1s Model rifle. Should be my Deer/Elk rifle for the future.

376 Steyr. I wish I’d kept mine but wasn’t reloading at the time. Ammo was scarce and expensive.

Winchester 44-40 that got stolen when my house was broken into. Loved that little rifle.
